The Samsung Galaxy S4 has been released http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21791023

Is yesterdays release the reason behind the delay to the HTC One?

As I see its its a SIII with a silly number of cores people wont use and load of sensors that will drain your battery...not impressed.

At least it will make the SIII cheaper.  ;)

I think I would still rather go with the Sony tbh. The SIII is nice phone but how many more updates will that get now the new one is out... I prefer the HTC One out of the three tbh in many ways, but HTC tend to drop support for phones quite quickly. I think we have reached a point where phones have reached an impasse, there is not much more we can get them to do, and do I need maybe features, like the new Samsung has, I think this article sums it up nicely http://www.cultofandroid.com/24216/the-samsung-galaxy-siv-all-tell-but-nothing-to-show-opinion/

I feel the same, Gary.  There's not really anywhere else to go that makes it worthwhile spending five hundred quid a year on a new phone, although, one that holds it's signal and doesn't keep dropping calls would be nice.

Nokia N95 did that well, also out shot the latest Nokia 920! My iPhone 5 holds signal fine and makes good calls, unless the 5S is really special I may just hunt out an old N95 8GB for my pleasure and be retro, man.

The problem I have is being right on the edge of a 3G area. I don't think the 4S handles switching between 3G and 2G very well, when a call is in progress.  I can practically guarantee, if I'm driving in certain areas, and a call comes in, the signal will fail at some point.

That said, the Blackberry did it too, so it's probably more to do with the signal the phone.

Wait till 4G hits, from what I know it does not actually use the 4G bit to make calls as that's just for data.  :eyebrow:

I wonder why 3G isn't just for data?  Presumably it's not required for calls.

My sentiments exactly, upgrade due beginning of June and I only want another 12 month contract as last time

How many Android updates will the SIII get? the new model would be the better buy as apps tend to use more ram if nothing else when its available. Also you may, get two updates out of the latest model. w00t  ::)

Doesn't bother me as I root them and install custom roms anyway. They are more of a toy for me, so getting a phone at a decent price(free phone and less than £40pm on a 12 mth contract) is more of a concern than getting the latest and greatest.

The S4 is pencilled in for next June  :thumb:

My current S2 has 4.1.2 on it  :thumb:

Just been looking around for some 12 month deals and spoke to an advisor at Three, apparently they don't do 12 month contracts only 18 and 24

Thought there was an EU law that stated operators had to offer 12 month contracts?

FritzBox

I see Three offer 12 month deals on sim only, guess that covers it then

Steve

I think that's it in theory.

Ahh makes sense, tbh the S3 and S4 are hardly any different octo core mobiles are I think stupid, people dont usually use that much power in a desktop. Selling phones by specs is the new in thing even though skype and Facebook aint going to tax that are they  ;)

3G can handle voice and data simultaneously.

If you want a no-frills, half decent smartphone much cheaper than the HTC or Samsung offerings, have a look at the Nexus 4.

Glenn

Google are replacing my Nexus 4 with a new one, about an 8mm wide section of the screen on the extreme right has be come unresponsive, so holding the phone in portrait the 'P' doesn't work or in landscape, the space bar.

I haven't looked at this phone yet, but I was really hoping they'd toughen up the case as that was all that was holding me back from buying the S3. I had a play and you can twist the case just by holding the top and bottom. If they made it as tough as the iphone I'd get one straight off the bat. Also the charger problems with the S3 that I've read about and seen with my mates wife's phone and my friend's phone are baffling too. Having to buy 3rd party chargers because the ones supplied are very poor, is a bit of a bitter pill to swallow.

I'll wait for some decent user reviews on this one. I'm tempted to get one just for a bit more freedom, but the apps I use on the iphone now are really good and some aren't supported on android, etc.

A pain in the arse is what it is! ;D

I think its hard once invested in a platform, I love the new Android phones, but I like my tablet, if I didn't have that maybe a S4 but I hate that plastic as you say, also if I can use it in one hand make calls and put in a pocket it does what I need and that's good enough.

I dunno why people don't make more rigid flagship phones. All the companies have rugged phones for the lower end of the market, and if they can't see that people would like to know their phone won't disintegrate when it is accidentally dropped then maybe they should sod off to another market :D

My mate has actually just moved from the S3 to the iphone 4s and my mum just moved from a lesser android phone to the iphone 4 (and oh the joy of explaining how to do what she does on a laptop on the phone, now I get pestered twice as much!). Both switched because of the flimsy nature of the other types of phones. I KNOW my phone would be fooked in weeks as I drop my iphone quite often, if only from a few inches over tables, but occasionally from about trouser pocket height.

Maybe I'll have an iphone for general use and an S4 for Sunday best :D
