I wonder if one of the downloads has become corrupted, have you tried disabling all the email accounts and then enabling each individually?

ASUS RT N66U beware the latest 2 firmwares both betas have a problem with 5Ghz and Broadcom chipsets. You may be interested in Asus Merlin WRT

Could there be a huge email attempting to download which is blocking the rest?  I know it shouldn't affect a 50Mb connection, but I think we're running out of other ideas.  :dunno:

I've never set up a direct PPPoE connection from the computer, how do I do that? Do you have a link to how it's done?

OS X  > Network Preferences > Ethernet Connection > Configure IPv4 > Create PPPOE service - fill the username and password > connect.

Hi Lance, I've never had to do it either, just clutching at straws.  I've never set up a direct PPPoE connection from the computer, how do I do that? Do you have a link to how it's done?

Just back from holiday in Maastricht, thanks for the link Lance, I will give that a go tomorrow. Also the firmware update has not been good as speed now down 10% to 46MBPS from 51MBPS  :( Will try and reverse that upgrade. Still have the problems with email taking hours to download from server.....have moved email on the idnet server to a different folder to see if any were affecting things Simon, no such luck, it's all still slow and not working as it should. Beginning to regret moving from a good 10MBPS ADSL2 connection which I've never had any problems with, to a poor FTTC connection.... :(

Regarding router firmware although I've never seen any issues except with the last 2 betas where WiFi at 5GHz is broken on some chipsets and did indeed reduce my WiFi throughput

3.0.0.4.270 works well also the Asus WRT Merlin 3.0.0.4.270.26b which I use, I don't use any QoS options.

Router downgrades are relatively straight forward with settings retained however you'll note that at some point there was an NVRAM size upgrade so I would assume to reverse you will again need to do a full router reset

I wonder could you set up a test user account on the iMac say, recreate each email account individually, use IMAP so that the mail stays on the server, test you can get mail and then disable that account , and then work your way through the rest likewise.

Although you've seen a speed reduction recently at 46mps it shows that FTTC throughput is good and not the cause of the slow mail.

Have you got the DNS settings manually entered into the Mac? I know some Macs seem to dislike some routers that act as a DHCP server that dont forward on DNS settings. This effected my mail download and sending speeds on one router I had, also IGMP Proxy can cause an issue for some so disabling that could also help if your router has this setting. Swings and roundabouts as it works ok on my D6300 but didn't on a previous router.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Hi Az,

If you can drop an email into support@idnet.com with your account details, we can try changing your IP address for you to determine if anything there is causing an issue.

Hi Folks, before trying any more of your useful suggestions, I have tonight tried Lances suggestion of a direct PPPoE connection (on the PC), bypassing the router. This worked and connected fine to idnet, the BT speed test was about 46MBPS same as through the router but that was down from 51MBPS as mentioned earlier. Opened up Outlook which connected to the mail server but same problem with downloading email. It's been running for over 2.5 hours and downloaded 23 of 27 messages, none with any attachments!!!! Previously with ADSL2 email would speed in within a couple of seconds or so and I have not changed anything in Outlook prior to moving to FTTC.

Steve, thanks for the info about the firmware and reversing it. I did that and still have the same situation with email. Internet and wifi work fine. I will try a few things on the iMac as you suggest. Thanks.

Gary, will take your feedback into account when testing on the MAC, thanks.

Brian, Thanks for the advice, will do as you say when I have tried the other suggestions, thanks.

Is it stalling on one particular message or are they all slow?

A further update, I have set up a couple of the idnet mail accounts on the iMAC Mail software, one as IMAP and mail has trickled in slowly but faster than on the PC but not as fast as my Gmail and iCloud mail comes in. It took about 6 minutes to download 37 emails from the idnet servers. On the PC, Outlook is still struggling to download mail at speeds of less than 100bps :-(  It's over 3.5 hours and still struggling with pulling in the email....although it is trickling in.... They are all slow Steve, I did clear all accounts by moving mail (using webmail) from the inbox to another folder in case it was a rogue email. But as new mail came it was still struggling to download it, so it's not one particular email causing the issue.

Brian, I will email support as you suggested for a different IP address to see if that will cure the problem.

Regards and thanks for the help and patience  :)

Hi folks,

EUREKA, Brian has given my account a new IP address and when I opened Outlook tonight it downloaded about 100 emails in 5-10 seconds.....so I'm not sure where the problem would have been or what caused it!!!! A DNS issue? I've no idea....just pleased I'm back to normal with email....

Many thanks for all your advice and stuff,

Regards

Steve

Reminds me of when the mail server broke in Jan 2012, there was a handful who couldn't regain access me included, the solution then was a change of IP address.

Speaking from over a quarter of a century developing software and working with IT...that seems about right :)

And I especially believe it where Outlook is concerned. This is the main product I work on:

http://www.krollontrack.com/software/powercontrols/

Trying to keep our MAPI support current and historically compatible is horrible. And MS love to keep changing the rules where Exchange is concerned. We should probably be grateful this was just POP3. I tried to think of some advice but everything I know relates to Outlook <-> Exchange communication which is a whole other ball game  :eek4:
