Many peeps seem not to like Windows 8. I have windows 7 but (understandably) the one under consideration comes with Windows 8, the salesperson says that Microsoft are bringing out a new version mid September. Does anyone know of this, if so is it worth waiting? Secondly is there much difference between Quad-core Intel Core i7  and i5 ? Perhaps I should add that I do not play games!! All help appreciated.
Nothing is perfect, not even my ignorance!

Windows 8.1 is indeed coming out soon, and apparently it re-introduces the Start button, which many people have found lacking in the current Windows 8.  Can't comment on the tech stuff, as I'm out of touch with current specs.

Windows 8 is much better than windows 7, especially the 64 bit version.  I have found nothing that cannot run on it, for older programs ie 16bit ones I normally use windows xp under a virtual machine set-up because 64 bit windows and windows 7 cannot run 16bit installers or programs.

When Windows 8.1 arrives it will brig more benefits so I would encourage anyone to go with Windows 8 as it is normally used in desktop mode most of the time.

From what I have read the reintroduction of the start button is a bit of a gimmick as all it will do is take you to the tiled view http://www.dailytech.com/Report+Start+Button+Returns+in+Windows+81++But+it+Dumps+You+in+Metro/article30393.htm so I think it might well be as big a flop as 8.

Unless you are a gamer you'll be fine with an i5 and although I am I decided to go with an i5 and have not noticed any performance issues so personally I'd go with an i5 for a general system as it should be more than fast enough for you.
