What not to do!!!!

Last night I was charging my ipod shuttle on PC and shut down the computer forgetting to remove the shuttle first.
This morning when I tried to boot up all I got was the Intel sign on a blue background. I thought I'll remove the shuttle and reboot thinking all would be well but got the same thing.

I got out my Medion manual and it said to switch off PC at the back then hold down the front switch for 10 seconds then wait 5 seconds before switching back on. PC came back to life so in future I won't be shutting down with my ipod still connected.

I have seen similar things happen before with PCs so yes I'd disconnect your iPod Shuffle in future.

I had a motherboard that refused to boot unless a usb stick was attached,even though C: was set as the primary device

Strangely I get the opposite. If I turn off an external drive, before turning off windows 7, it gets stuck trying to turn off the drive that's no longer there. I have to turn the drive back on or unplug it completely.

I have an external drive that prevents Windows from starting if it's left powered on! Computers am strange.

Sounds like a BIOS setting somewhere Simon as I can set a USB drive as a boot device in the BIOS (if one is attached) and it'll simply fail to boot if it cant find an OS on it.

It's definitely not set to boot from that drive, Mitch. I did wonder if it was because it's a mains powered external drive, as my other USB powered drive stays connected all the time and doesn't produce any issues. It's not a big deal as I only use the drive occasionally, as it just homes old backups.

Mine is the opposite of that too. The mains powered one seems fine, the usb powered one plays up.

If I leave my Printer and my powered usb on my computer takes twice as long to start up. If I turn them off it starts up within 5 seconds and is up and running in 25 seconds, with them powered it takes up to 1.5 minutes some days. Strange or what.
