Hi Lance, Just to let you know  >:D  I purchased a 2wire card for my laptop from a guy on ebay, just set it up and it has blown away the Belkin one I was using. Have you tried the link to increase range on the 2700HGV yet and if so which version of firmware does it work on?
I don`t know which I like the best the new router or IDNET (suspect that it`s IDNET first and then the router but its aclose thing)  :evilb: :evilb:

For your info my software and hardware versions.
Hardware Version: 2701-100589-005
Software Version: 5.29.107.19
.

Den

Thanks for that old Bill. Checked my log and it shows Wireless power set to 50. This has not changed since I first set up the router. Shall I try a higher number or leave well alone. I could do with some extra range as the lounge is quite a way from my study.   ;D

old Bill

Well if thats correct your on very risky ground. Setting 25 is the UK legal limit.

Den

I have not alltered any settings I just checked the log using the link you posted. When I checked back to when it was first powered up that was the setting on there. In the manual it shows how to change settings but the part to change the settings does not display. I have just tried the link that you posted and the power setting is still on 50. :-[

When I brought mine this is the info I was sent.

The power settings
VALUE=1 25MW VALUE=2 50MW  VALUE=3 75MW VALUE=4 100MW  NOT LEGAL AMOUNTS VALUE=5 150MW  VALUE=6200MW   VALUE=7 250MW  VALUE=8 300MW VALUE=9350MW  VALUE=10 400MW (SURPLY THE WHOLE NEIGHBOURHOOD WITH YOUR WIRELESS SIGNAL)

Thinking about it the 50 could mean 50% power which would be 150MW or it could mean value=2 which is 50mw.

old Bill

I emailed the person I brought the router from about changing the wireless settings. This is the reply I recieved.

I've recently confirmed that the wireless power with the new BT firmware cannot be changed. It appears to change, but when I monitor it from a different device, it is the same. So it's not really worth trying to change

No chance of me piggybacking Lance's connection then... ;)

You will be very glad you did not go for the Zyxel >:( ::) ::)

My neighbour came in 2 nights back ,his router  had packed up and he can't send in his days figures etc.

Get the nice new Zyxel out of box .......plug it in and.....terrible smell and flashing of lights, end of story.

Getting Zyxel to respond for an RMA is like getting a tax refund.
If this is what they call service I won't be keeping any replacement,it will be in the freeads and gone.

It took Zyxel 5 days to respond and that after 4 emails.Broadbandbuyer however ,having been blasted by phone have reacted promptly and replaced the router which is now up and running.

Thanks for the update DB, I am well impressed with my Zyxel, not sure if it is a coincidence but my speeds have increased since using it, over my older BT Voyager 2100.

Could well be an increase in speed they are known to be good on very long lines, though you are so close to the exchange any router "should " be able to deliver the maximum performance.

The logging is very good in the Zyxel, lots of configuration available too, excellent firewall control and a content filter which is great for family use.

old Bill

All I can say is now that BT has finished doing work to my line this BT 2700 is amazing. I have seen a 1 meg increase in download speed. ;D

Den

On the same lines: My speed is always about 6300kbps now and very stable. As you know I was lucky to get 3500 and some times as low as 100. After joining idnet the next best thing I have done was buy the BT 2700HGV. Thanks to everybody.  ;D ;D ;D

Thank you
Mr Music Man.

Got my highest speed ever recorded at DSLZone last night, 6999, which equates to 95% throughput, which was a better speed than some on BE so called 24 Mps,and Sky 16Mps. I will break that 7000 mark yet. ;)

I am sure there is room for improvement, I havn't done a thing, just plugged it in, and go.

Still I aint obsessed with speed, like some peeps. ;D ;D

Lol,

You gotta love these 2700's, I have not looked back since getting one and have had the confidence to sell all my other 3 routers for good money.

I know this router is not THE BEST for ALL lines but for long lines it seems top notch.

As previously said, IDNET + 2700HGV = HEAVEN ON EARTH..........................(well almost !!)

If you get a chance to try one go for it, you may never look back.................

Oh and tomorrow I can add more speed cos the new QOS banding gives me 250Kbs more, which I would not have with any of the other 3 routers.

BUT best of all.........................................

Loss of signals since = 1 (SWEB Power outage), none for any other reason (not bad for over 2 months) , rock solid noise margin and no degradation of service.

and it cost less than £30 !!!

I will stop now I am drooling on the keys....................

Stop it before the keyboard short circuits!  ;D

Glad you're getting such good results.

Lance

I wonder if IDNet are aware of these wonderful routers? It may be worth them doing a little investigation to see whether they would be able to offer them for their packages?

I've been reading about these, they seem rather good.

I found this site www.digidave.co.uk they sell the 2700HG (no VOIP) for 29.99 - seems quite good to me :) - I'm tempted.

You can't really go wrong, based on the experience of those who have tried the router, Dave. Though, on your line, it's not going to have to work hard. :)

I think these routers are only of any benefit to people on long lines.

BTW, does the £29.99 price include delivery from Jersey? I cannot find any reference to Delivery Charges.

( Probably staring me in the face .  ;D ).

Jimbo

Wow interesting read.

I've been having problems with my line at the moment, and I don't think the Billion Router was helping things.  At the moment I am trying out a cheap-o £20 Netgear Router and it seems to be doing a bit better.

After reading this topic though it would appear that like for Lance, this BT 2700HGV is the Router for me! ;)

A few questiosn though, what's all this talk of locked and unlocked models?!

What should I try and get?

Also, where do I get one from?  Lance do you perhaps a link to where you purchased yours through?

Thanks for any help! :)

Rik

Hi Jimbo

These routers were supplied by BT for their customers and are locked to the BT service. You can purchase an unlocked one, or unlock it yourself, sources include eBay and the Jersey-based supplier in Dave's link.

Given your line, and the experience of others so far, I'd say it was worth trying one - if it solves your problems, you can sell the Billion and the Netgear.

Lance will be along later with his source - the router is also being talked about over on ThinkBroadband with the eBay seller, ydrol, getting praise.
