The iPads downloading the update  :thumb:

Well it was an error occurred, trying again   :fingers:

This could be a long thread.

I think you can choose to download but not install in iTunes, can't you?  That might ensure that the download is complete before the installation proceeds, but I actually think it does that anyway, as if the download fails, the installation won't start and the previous OS is restored.

I'm late at work so not going to worry about it.

Tried both phone and iPad a few times, they start to download the update but after a minute or so comes up with an error message. I guess it is the server overloaded, I'll try later.

When connected to iTunes neither show an update is available.

Simon

Will this work on the iPad 1?

How are you starting the downloads, Loz?

I don't think the iPad 1 is supported.

I'm doing the updates from the device via settings-general-software update.

My iPhone 5 which I wasn't going to do is now nearly finished!

My daughters phone 4S is still downloading, after many errors.

The iPad which was the test device won't stop showing errors so will try later.

Simon

I didn't think you could do major updates like this over the air.  You live and learn.  :)

That said I still think I prefer to do it through iTunes, so you get the backup and the full clean installation.

My phones completed off for a play  ;D

Steve

No iPad 1 that's stuck on iOS 5, no iOS 7 for the 3GS , butbas Zap said performance enhancements I suspect will be A6 processor and upwards.

No problem doing it over the air in fact it maybe advantageous as it stops iTunes sticking it's finger in.

I agree with Steve, as long as you do a backup first I'd update over the airwaves if you've got WiFi. For a start you'll probably get the update much earlier and iTunes won't be there to crash or cause problems.

Bearing in mind I don't use The Cloud, if it all went tits up, I'd be able to restore my last backup through iTunes, even though that was iOS6, yes?

Phone update seems fine and looks good.

Only problem I can see is the email now seems to list all new mail in a single inbox, I've a iCloud and a Gmail account which I would like listed separately.

Simon

Can't do it OTA anyway, as it needs more space than I have available, so will have to remove some music files first.

Steve

Your likely problem is a failed download , the download is checked before install for it's integrity, so it will not update unless the download is complete and correct.

Sorted out the email, I fully quit the app and then restarted it, it now lists the separate accounts

Emails were all in a single box before but you can list them individually if you want just don't choose all inboxes.

Thanks Gary it seems to have sorted itself out now, the 4S is now rebooting and the iPad is downloading.

Simon

OK, how do you cancel an OTA download?  I removed my music and created enough space, but it's saying 22 hours remaining, and there seems to be no way to stop it!

If there isn't an onscreen software cancel button I'd leave well alone and let it go about its business.

Steve

Just carry on using the phone Simon as usual, I am with the iPad, it's just downloading a file, it will get there in the end, today, tomorrow etc. My phone may update sometime tomorrow at the current rate.
