Watched the Apple keynote earlier and saw these all new earphones unveiled which apparently draw in air at the stem which allows the diaphragm to move more freely or some such thing (my JVC boomblaster has some tubes at the back to allow air to escape when the woofer cones are pulled in by the magnet)

I've found the bass response on Apple 'phones to be dreadful and turning on the EQ bass enhancer often just distorts the audio.

Has anyone bought the new ones and how good is the sound from them without using the software enhancement?

They are much better than the old ones Mitch. They feel comfortable in the ear and the base is deeper and the overall sound quality much better. I'm no audiophile but as a standard supply with the iPhone 5 they are a definite improvement.

I've never used mine, from the 3GS, or the 4S, primarily because I don't like things sticking in my ears, but I thought they'd sound rubbish anyway.  I much prefer full headphones, which sound great with my 4S, with no equalisation or sound tweaks.

I don't like the Apple ones, they never stay in my ears.

I use Sennheisers CX 400-II Precision for my iPod/iPhone. Very good set of earphones & great sound.

Two votes for Sennheiser, I also use Bose QC3 when bulk is not important.

Im not keen on in ear ones too and can only use them for so long but find some full headphones are a bit clumsy some times, depending on what you use of course.

The apple ones are just horrible so I have these

really good sound quality and for blocking out sound to a level that you have to be extra careful if wearing them outside, crossing roads etc. comfortable to wear, again only for so long for me, but thats personal choice isnt it

I finally bought a set of these and the sound and bass is superb.

I agree and I'm quite fussy when it comes to audio.
