Anyone actually got one yet?  Someone I know is waiting for the iPad 5, and was wondering how long it might take from the announcement, when it comes, to actually getting the hardware.

Got mine about a week ago, Simon. The are rumours that the iPad mini may be in very short supply if it has the updated retina display (or higher) due to lack of inventory for build till next year, thats just rumour so who knows. iPhone 5s are tricking out and more are hitting shelves on October/November. New iMac's were released without fanfare and are available too.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Gary

As with all new releases waiting for a while to make sure no issues are present in the first build is always safer. I wont be buying the new PS4 for that very reason. I'll wait for first hardware revision. Phones are always touch and go with so many made you can get a great handset or a lemon at any time.

They're not after the iPad Mini, but the full size 5, Gary.  Hopefully they will ship fairly soon after the announcement.  How are you finding the 5S?

There probably an Apple event on the 15th October, so expect Wifi iPads by beginning of November and mobile ones by the end of next month.

Its good, I like just putting my thumb on the home button when opening the phone instead of entering my password, nice feature, sound is better than the 5 call wise, and the camera is amazing in low light with no flash, so far I'm very impressed. It runs fast and very smooth too and you can when its avialable ad 4G as a bolt on on O2 on simplicity. AS for new iPads if they have anodising I'll be happy to have my version. The 5s has better anodising than the 5 more robust, but I'd hate something the size of an ipad to have it, its going to look very scuffed very quickly. I think my next tablet may not be Apple. When you look at specs like say the phablet that is the galaxy note 3 you get 3GB ram a 2.3 Ghz processor  and a 5.7 inch screen without Apple tax, that makes Android tablets very tempting if they follow that line of power. Apple needs to catch up.  Shame the note 3 is region locked.

But it's not all about processor speed the A7 still out performs the Samsung 2.3 quad cores.

Agreed, but it is about ram, iPads get far to many low memory warnings using Safari. Also it would be nice to have a proper file, if I am going to use a tablet more and more I want it to have usb connectors, more ram and I guess not so much of the walled garden approach. The iPad is great, I love it, I just want more than iOS7 will give it as far as software functionality. Also a stylus that works like the samsung s pen would be useful too.

Not seen any low memory warnings using Safari but I've heard of memory warnings on Android on this very forum. Stylus I agree would be useful, I'm not bothered about usb connections as most of my stuff sits in the cloud.

Safari gets loads of warnings in diagnostics if you look. It cant deal with the OS and heavy HTML pages well with its current ram size. Having used a Galaxy note 2 It was nice to be able to set a default browser other than the stock one. I dont and wont use 'the cloud' so USB3 speeds would be great, the 5s is still usb2 I believe... downloading updates GPS updates for my camera and uploading it to the thing would be useful. The iPad is limited by the fact its closed, tbh it does make it secure but also frustrating at times. Also for what you get its damn expensive. No matter how much I like Apple their QC is going down hill and for the price you can get more bang for your buck from Android devices.

If I didn't use the cloud or my LAN local storage I wouldn't use the tablet/iPad much at all, a laptop would then be a better option for me.

Gary, I'm surprised that someone as security conscious as yourself trusts Apple with their thumbprint.  It'll be DNA samples next.  ;) ;D

Mind you the way some people adore their devices it will be another type of sample analysed next.

Looks like October 22nd is now the more likely date for any new iPad announcement

I was hoping for a 13" iPad but that's not sounding so likely now.
