Problems with Mozilla Thunderbird running under Windows8

Frequently when trying to send emails it fails with this message:

Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending mail: SMTP server SMPT.outitgoes.com is unknown. The server may be incorrectly configured. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again.

It keeps failing for an indeterminate length of time, minutes rather than hours, then will work. When it fails it will fail when I try another email soon after, however once it works I can send other emails OK then. Any suggestions please?

Is SMPT.outitgoes.com correct for your email provider? I thought it was smpt.idnet.com for IDNet mail.

Yes it is correct, I got so fed up with changing my email addresses with my provider that I now have my own address with an independent email provider. works well for me, I also have lots of email addresses, one for buying stuff, one for banking etc. this makes it very easy to spot junk.

I have several email providers, so my Thunderbird has several SMTP servers stored. If one gives trouble (they all do once in a blue moon) I simply change the default to another. IIWY I'd at least have your "outitgoes" and IDNet set up, and maybe Gmail as well.

Assuming you haven't changed any settings, and as it works sometimes, that would suggest the settings are correct, I think your best bet would be to contact the email provider, as it could be their server having issues.

I won't start a new post, but may hijack this one. Doing some simple updating and testing of a Windows 8 machine. Let's just say, the amount of fiddling just to do 1 thing, I'm concluding:

Windows 8 is broken by design.

The OS is great. The GUI a clever idea. But by design, they have made everything just convoluted and broken. For example, the latest update removes the IE icon from the desktop (I'm guessing EU comp regs), and offers no quick/easy option to find the desktop over the Metro version. AFAIK it only opens the metro version. That would not be a problem, if the metro version 1) worked (websites fail on it for various reasons) 2) Was easy to use.

I thought that I would kick Mozilla Thunderbird into touch and use Windows email program. But like Ben I found that it was so difficult I have given up on that and reverted to the dodgy Thunderbird. I spent ages with the help of my email supplier following their advice to fix it, but to no avail.....

Thunderbird is not dodgy it works pretty well, have you tried Windows live mail or is that what you were talking about? Its fairly simple to set up tbh. Is your Firewall blocking it by any chance? What security are you using?

I am using Microsoft's built in security software. I love Thunderbirs and was not knocking it, however I am just trying to resolve the problem I have had under Windows 8. The problem with the built in email with Windows 8 is that it seems that you can only display the email, whereas with Thunderbird you can reduce it and look at other things simultaneously.

Try downloading Windows Live mail its much better than the email client with windows 8. Grab it from the Microsoft web site. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-live/essentials-other#essentials=overviewother
