I suspect Windows 9 'Threshold' might just help cement Windows 7's position as the new XP, an operating system will last for years and years and years. I hope I'm wrong but the whispers currently doing the rounds suggest a radical OS based on Metro's GUI :(

They really need to junk it, fix the problems with the gadget sidebar and bring back the start menu proper or here's an idea, give people a choice?

Simon

I thought I read a while ago that they were bringing back the full Start menu with the next version.  I also think they may be trying to keep up with Apple by releasing new versions each year, but I think a lot of people prefer to stick with what they know.  I can't see many people who have just purchased Windows 8 upgrading to 9 - unless it's going to be free, like 8.1.

Windows 8.1 brought back the Start menu didn't it? Windows 9 won't be released for at least another 15 months but it's been in development for quite sometime, hence the rather worry rumours that are starting to leak out. It's said to be more Metro than Metro, quite a departure from the more traditional interface most users are familiar with. Of course it's probably better to just wait and see. I'd convinced myself from what I'd read that iOS 7 was going to be dreadful when in fact I think it is inspired.

There's a Start button with 8.1, and if you right click it, there are some additional options, but the traditional Start Menu is still absent.

Certainly I was glad I didn't read to much about iOS 7 before it arrived, I have no issues with it on the iPad. Kitkat was  very different, no prior knowledge beforehand and it was very easy to get used to. It's great to have an intuitive OS.

I thought it looked quite similar after a cursory glance but it could have been modified I guess.

I think MS need to have two GUIs over the same base. One would be for business and advanced users which gives the look of windows 7 yet brings updated security/functionality of a new OS, and a version for general home users going in whatever direction MS wants to take.

Pah. Dispense with the silly GUI and just get everyone using PowerShell.

Gah. I was hoping the whispers about the start menu meant it was less like metro... Oh well, the last real reason to keep Windows (GUI) is gone. I'll go over to Mint then, where it at least WORKS or I can chose between Ubuntu Early Learning Center (no offense to those who use it, it's actually better than FisherPrice Metro, but both have too big icons for a HD sceen I feel, great for touch though) and any other type of GUI.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.
