I'm a bit confused by there apparently being two different phone numbers (and charges?) for IDNet Support, 01462 476 555 and 0800 0267 237. Why would the first number be used? I did search for this on the forum but couldn't find an answer.

Rik

Hi Noreen

The 0800 number is there as a service, the other number is the underlying geographic number. Anyone phoning from a mobile might prefer the geographic number if networks charge for the 0800 numbers.

Thanks Rik, just trying to sort all these questions out before the big day on Monday (hopefully).  :)

The email from IDNet said that the migration should be completed BY 6pm on 23 July so I'm presuming that that means it'll actually be done sometime on that day and probably not before. As I've previously said, I've never done a broadband migration before, I suppose that I'll know that the migration has taken place by the lights on my Netgear router which is permanently on.

Rik

Most migrations are done in the small hours, Noreen, and people find out they've been migrated because their router is complaining about an invalid (old) login. Pop in the new details and off you go. It might be a bit later in the day for an LLU, but basically you'll know it's happening when you lose the connection. We'll be waiting for you. :)

At the moment my router has been connected for over 3,700 hours and that previous disconnection was only for maintenance reasons so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the future.

Rik

Mine's only been connected for 24 hours, Noreen, nasty thunderstorms yesterday.  :'(

Once more Noreen has asked a question that had occurred to me! Thanks Noreen!

Sorry to barge in on your thread though, but could I just ask Rik if it will be as simple to re-set my modem as you make it sound for Noreen's router? Confidence is beginning to wane!

Jillian.

Noreen

Hi Jillian, sorry that I can't answer your question but I wondered when is the migration date for you? Make sure that you read the FAQs at the start of this Forum's threads, there's a lot of good info there.

Rik

Hi Jillian

If you're using a Speedtouch 330 'frog', you'll need to create a new connection using the login details from IDNet, it's a little more complicated than changing the name/password in a router, but not hugely so.

Hi Noreen, "activation by 6pm on 23rd July" so exactly the same as you. :) And yes, I have ploughed my way through the FAQ's, now a little bit wiser.

Rik, mine's the BT Voyager 105, I just knew something would get complicated! ::)

Rik

I haven't used one, Jillian, but the principle will be the same, you need to edit the existing connectoid, or create a new one with the IDNet details.

Thanks Rik. By the way, you mentioned the 5GB service and how it came about. It is the reason why I've signed up, 2GB at the "other place" ;D just wasn't quite enough, not since I discovered YouTube!

Jillian.

Rik

Hi Jillian

One of the things we treasure about IDNet is the fact that we can talk to Simon and Tim and be listened to. 2GB was adequate initially, but as you say, with an evolving web, it was becoming a bit 'thin'. It's not just You Tube, of course, just keeping machines patched with software updates is an increasing demand on bandwidth.

Our community here is a focus for development ideas. I can't guarantee we'll get everything we ask for, but I do guarantee that our ideas will be heard and thought about.

Jillian you just need to click on your Voyager Modem icon then  click on " Connect " in the top box, there you just enter your user id, which will be something like joeblogs@uk.idnet.dsl4, then enter your chosen password, that should be it.

Good luck.

PS, Your USB Modem will not work with Vista.

I couldn't help LOL when I read the bit about Vista, Inactive.

Yesterday I decided I would like to see what my old Voyager 105 made of my present connection.  Mainly because it always provided a rock solid connection, and I thought it may even outperform this router.
As is usual when you have these bright ideas (Murphy again! ::)), it turned out to be necessary for me to spend most of my time under the desk, re-routing cables.
I should of course have tried loading the software into Vista before moving all the furniture.  :D  At my age, (even Rik is a young man to me! ::)) it reminds you of your shortcomings.

So you can imagine I was not a happy man to find it didn't run in Vista, and as is usual with all these firms trying to force you to buy their latest gizmos, they no longer support the 105.  :evilb: :flamethrower: >:D

All M/S could find was for me to search their Compatability List for 'similar' devices!

So I put it all back again!!  :D  With the exception I fed the router directly to it's socket (Phone is cordless handset) without a filter, just for the hell of it .......... with not a blind bit of difference to any stats.

So that's how I waste my time these days!!  ;D

Sounds like the sort of thing I would do Mo, i'm still laughing at your little story. :D :D

Thanks for that info Inactive and for the link. I don't have Vista so that's one blessing!

'Fraid my kneeling days are over Mohux so fingers crossed I don't come unstuck tomorrow. Husband doesn't understand a thing about computers but will fiddle with wires if pushed!

Like your story though! :)

Rik

In the longer term, Jillian, you may want to think about moving to a router. Even if you only connect one PC to broadband, they offer significant security advantages over USB modems and, at the same time, put less drain on CPU resources.

DSL Depot currently have the Speedtouch 545 for £10.

You will be OK, it took me all of one minute to change my details and I was up and running immediately.

Good luck. ;)

Lance

Just to go back to the original topic ( :o shock horror!) I for one prefer to use the geographic number as it doesn't cost me anything from my mobile! And I prefer my mobile to the house phone!

Not strictly correct Lance .. it doesn't cost you anything over and above your monthly mobile contract charge. .. never heard of a completely free mobile phone..  ;D ;D ;)
