New printer

My Samsung Laser printer has seen better days and is falling apart - a bit like its owner.     The cartridge has also come to the end of its life so I'm looking for a new printer.  I no longer require a laser because I now print far fewer copies than I have in the past and Computeractive recommends as their best buy the Canon Pixmar MG4250 at a target price of £50.  The reviews on Amazon are excellent but the description implies it will only work on Windows 7 and Vista.  One of our laptops will need replacing in a year or so and I'm hoping to hang on for Windows 9.  Is there any reason Canon have stopped producing drivers for post Win7 machines or was the description written pre-Win8?   :dunno:

My Canon MP610 works fine with a 8.1 laptop, so I would think others do too.

I think at your age Clive, John Bull printing set would suit you better. ;) :hide2:

I used to LOVE my John Bull printing set Lona!  Gosh, what fond memories you've brought back!   ;D  I'll bet kids don't have them these days!  Thanks Steve, it doesn't actually specify the 4250 on your magic list but I'll take your word for it.  It's either a new printer or my John Bull printing set!

The MG4250 is on the list Clive near the bottom of page 2.

Thanks for mentioning that, I've got a Canon MP620 so that should be okay too but I'm just using it with XP and 7 at the moment.

I've been very satisfied with the Canon, it gives good reseults with third party cartridges which a relatively cheap. The only problem, which isn't really much of an issue, is that it seems to take a bit longer than I think should be necessary.

I've read some good reviews of HP printers but all the ones I've seen for sale at my local Costco have used a single cartridge for colour which tend to work out more expensive if one colour runs out much before the others.

I have a Canon scanner which is a very nice piece of kit and has lasted for many years.

FWIW I too have a Canon scanner - one of the first of the very slim flatbed ones.  I bought it a couple of months after I got a Sinclair Z88.  I'll leave it to others to work out how long ago that was.   ;D

Needless to say it's still going strong and is used regularly.  Canon no longer supply drivers for it, so I use the excellent VueScan, which I think is also available for Windows.

I have a Canon Pixma iP6700D and it really is superb, but I also have one of the Selphy range for small colour prints and the quality is fantastic but Canon have stopped support of all the Selphy range which makes you lose faith in them as a company as they are still selling them on Amazon.  :-\

I've bought my Canon Pixmar for £39.99 from the local Coop, beating my target price by a long shot and driving a hole through Amazon's £58 for the same printer.  Only goes to show!    :o

Sounds like a good deal!  :thumb:

I bought a Canon MG6250 a few years back, excellent printer, replaced my dead IP5000 which lasted a good 5 years or so.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Clive

My Samsung lasted 7 years making it the best printer I ever had.  Toner cartridges were £30 each and I had to buy two in that time.  All my previous printers - HPs, Epson and Brother were dogs and barely made it past the warranty period.   :o

The printer was very easy to set up and detected my Netgear router without problem.  The print quality is excellent but after having a laser printer all these years I had forgotten how noisy and busy inkjet printers were!

Remove your hearing aid, Clive, you won't hear the noise. :hide:
