OK thanks Rik.
In case you see this tomorrow, I checked the telnet info and there were no errors at all reported. The 'Summary' tab did not mention errors so I looked under 'Terminal' and this is the entire report. No changes in errors later either.

I will do my homework as you suggest, though I tried to read 'Optimising your connection' before and had a comprehension issue.

edit to remove ip address

There's certainly nothing to be concerned about with the error count, so we're left with wiring, after which you need to involve support. If you can try connecting with nothing but the router plugged in, and also disconnecting the ring wire if possible, then do a BT speed test. That should eliminate just about everything you can.

I will do that Rik, and I will soon stop asking for your help. However, I just want to tell you about the Routerstats graph for noise that I now have. Yesterday it was spiking tightly all over the place, between 18 and 8, 4, even careering to 0. at 10.30 pm. Presumably dropped the connection, and then was a bit more settled, between about 20 and 12. Then a radical sudden change at 5 am, with very little variation, around 20, with some straight lines and occasionally up to 22 or down to 18. Not yet 25, but a lot better. The router lights are virtually solid this morning. My bbc pings are min 13, max 14.!
Is there an explanation?

Rik

I'm wondering whether BT have been doing some work at the exchange. I lost sync from 10:28 - 10:34 last night. Normally, if I do, it's for a few seconds at a time - not six minutes. I'm just wondering whether there's been some nationwide work which they haven't bothered to tell anyone about, it wouldn't be the first time. :(

Those ping speeds are fine, so I would suggest keeping an eye on how your line performs for the next few days (though it is still worth removing the ring wire when you're feeling energetic ;)).

well I have learnt a lot, even if it has sorted itself out. The FAQs are also a great education. So many thanks Rik-- karma coming your way!
And I am encouraged to go for Max, when I am on holiday and less in need of a reliable connection, to allow for the settling time.
Cheers,
Jinny ( MrsGrey)

Hi Jinny

Glad I could help, if it was a help. :)

Max should give you a healthy speed boost, but do get rid of the ring wire first, it can make a big difference.
