It's always had XP on it and previously, when I have had to reinstall, the same audio driver has always loaded ok - that's what's so frustrating this time around...

Steve

Long time since I installed Windows but any other exclamation marks in device manager? Did you install the motherboard software first? Anyway of extracting the correct driver from the cab?

By any chance, being American did it have a different set of drivers previously? Even something like a keyboard layout or.... language pack? (I know those wishing to play Japanese/Chinese games that never got an English translation, or just buying a PC here, but playing their birth tongue language games, often have to install those language packs else it never works on their PC.

Though never had that from a driver.

PS, the problem I had on this Win 7 machine and AM3 board was sound popping/crackling on the mic (I bought a new mic just to find it was a driver problem later :( ). I ended up installing the drivers direct from the AC97 website, but did find newer motherboard manufacture ones that were updated.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

Steve...everything else in Device Manager is ok and yes, the Chipset driver was the first one I installed - I double-checked and it is using the correct one according to the Gateway specification. I tried to match the Audio device with all of the files within the Chipset files, but no luck at all. I could go back and uninstall all the drivers and start over, if you think it might help?
Ben...the set of drivers I have are the same as I've had all along and match with the ones listed on the Gateway support site for this model. That's what's so annoying, I've reinstalled a few times before with the same drivers and had no problems.

Lateral thinking is there any way the presence of an alternative OS is affecting the Windows install.Don't know why is should though.

Steve...I did wonder about that, but when I did both fresh reinstalls of XP, it was the only OS on the machine and the audio driver wouldn't install at that point - in both cases I added Linux afterwards and the sound is fine when I boot into that.

Just for the record, I finally solved this today after almost giving up...
The .inf file in the installer package didn't have my device i.d. within it for some reason, so I added an extra line in Notepad, re-ran the .exe file and all is now well.
