I'm helping out at my local Age Concern, just helping the elderly with getting online, emails etc. I'm finding it very rewarding and more than a little scary at times.
However, one of the ladies wanted me to show her how to convert old colour photos to electronic versions as a family member has bought her a digital photo frame.
She's got a fairly new Canon all-in-one and the scanner works quite well, with none of the moire patterns that you often get when scanning photos thus far.
However, while it works well, the Canon supplied scanner software is laborious. You have to scan one photo, then name and save it before moving on to the next scan.
My own (now very long in the tooth) Epson Perfection had a "Smart Panel" where you could scan many images and rename all of them before saving.
So, since Canon don't seem to have one, does anybody know of a good free scanner manager program (sorry, that should be "app" - she's on Windows 8) that will make the scanning of multiple photos a little less laborious.

Have you tried Canon's support website to see if there is a Canon application that you can download.

I have a Canon all-in-one device and the software that cam with it does allow me to keep scanning images and I think you can save them as separate files or a single file. I presume it's possible to re-name the file(s) before you save them but I don't use it very often so can't confirm this.

I have a Canon MP Series all-in-one...that uses a Program called "MP Navigator" which allows multiple scanning - although I think it saves them sequentially starting with something like "img001"...obviously you can rename the file afterwards.
As John advised, go to the Canon UK website and search your model in the Support section, there might be an equivalent Program there.

Thanks guys for taking the time to respond. I did check the Canon website for software on her MG5500 all-in-one, but nothing jumped out at me. I'm assuming whoever installed the printer/scanner used the cd supplied. I might try downloading the latest from the Canon website as this may well include the MP navigator or MG equivalent (no progs are actually listed) that may not have been included on the disc.
