No internet since power cut

We had a power cut this morning, and since then, I've had no internet.  The router (7800N) is powered on, but the Broadband light is just flashing, rather than staying on, so it looks like it's not authenticating.  Area code 01444.  Any suggestions?  I don't know whether to leave it and see what happens later, or try another router.

Is it the same for your neighbours?

No one that I know is in at the moment.

Tried a different router, but same problem.  Not authenticating.  :-\

A neighbour on Sky Broadband has said theirs is fine.

Mine is syncing, according to the router, but not authenticating.

Turn the router off for 30 - 60 minutes it may clear a bad session.

Good point, either that or the power cut taxed the router to much, nothing on the Zen website, Simon with your area code. If you can get a small UPS they are worth their weight in gold for things like this.

Simon

Tried another router, but same problem.  Syncs fine but won't authenticate.  Gone out now, so will be powered off for a couple of hours at least.

Does your landline work? Have you tried the test socket? Did you call out of hours so they can do a line test?

Sounds like a stale session, if it doesn't clear , support is your only choice although sometimes a wrong password is said to help.

I've called the OOH service and they've tested the line, which seems OK.  I think all they can really do is go through the router settings, but as nothing has been changed, I can't really see the point of that.  I fear this will have to wait till Monday when I can speak to IDNet themselves, but will see what happens when I power up again later.

If its an ISP stale session support should be able to sort it, any of the other two types 30 mins should sort it out. How long was the power cut, Simon?

I can't see that it would be worth trying the test socket, as it seems to be syncing fine, just not authenticating the PPP session.

Gary, no idea how long the power cut was, but it came back on around 6:15 this morning.

Hopefully leaving the router off should sort it, Simon. If is a glitch with IDNets who knows, I have noticed though that their DNS servers have swapped round recently it had been 212.69.40.3 as the primary DNS but it seems to be back to 212.69.36.3 as the primary now.

Would that affect authentication, Gary?

No, you can use them either way, I just have mine set to automatic and noticed the session dropped quickly as they changed. Then an hour later while looking down a hole opposite BTOR me disconnected my FTTC and landline  ::) which was nice

Well, I've got home, powered up, and it's not even syncing now.  :bawl:

Have you checked your log in details and password are ok in the router, it might be worth entering them again incase they got corrupted when the power cut happened.

Odd especially as you say it happens on two routers. Sounds like its something to do with your line and it happened to be a coincidence that it appeared at the same time as a the power cut. Id still try the test socket as thats what support will ask you to do anyway.

I've re-entered the login details several times.  They hadn't been changed when I first logged into the router.

I've also just tried the test socket, and it's the same.  ADSL light just flashing (not syncing) and internet light off.

I feel sure it's something in the exchange, but I can't do anything until Monday as I can't even report a BT fault as I'm with IDNet for my phone as well.

Well, I'm buggered!  I've just set up the new router again (Billion 7800DXL), and it's working!  :stars:

I'll have a proper play later, but initially, the wifi signal from the 7800DXL doesn't seem as strong as the 7800N, as I've had to move the BT extender closer to the router to get an optimum signal.

pctech

I ordered a DXL to try as an alternative when I had broadband woes in March and found the same so I returned it as it made no difference anyway, it's to do with the antenna design which is more directional on the DXL, why they had to change from the omnidirectional design I don't know.

It's hardly a statistically valid sample, but I've seen several comments over on tbb that the wireless performance of the DXL is nothing to rave about compared to the N.

I can't get any of my devices to 'see' the 5Ghz network either, even though it seems to be enabled.

This directional thing - haven't I read something about that somewhere before?  Isn't it supposed to pick up the location of wireless devices so as to optimise the wifi signal?
