Outlook has now priced itself out of the my market so I'm looking for an alternative and I'm considering Windows Live Mail. Does anyone use it? It looks like it has all the the functionality that I require, email client, contact list, calander etc. and being free it sits within my current price range! Does anyone know if it syncs well with iOS and can you uninstall all the bloat that comes with it?

I installed Windows Live Mail on my friend's Laptop which is running Windows 8.1 and it seems fine.
I have no idea about its compatibility with iOS though.
When I downloaded the Windows Live Essentials suite (I think the latest one was v2012?), I did a custom install and only selected the mail client.

I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for the info :)

I'd be interested to know if you can import data such as Calendar and Contacts from Outlook, and if it will sync with iTunes.

It has to if I'm going to use it! I've got as far is installing it and testing send/receive which unsurpisingly appears to work as intended. As Peter said, you can use a custom install to install the mail client only. As far as importing data is concerned, I'm hoping that once I've installed iTunes and pointed it at the mail client, my calender data and contacts list will get dumped into it when I sync my phone? Or maybe I'll end of an empty calender and no friends when the two sync, who knows! ;D

I prefer the look of it to the version of Outlook I was using which admittedly was probably quite old. So far I'd describe it as Outlook without the bloat.

[EDIT] Clearly my next job is to find a spulling chicker for Firefox :)x And if anyone is wondering what I'm on about, I'm reinstalling my PCs along with a terabyte of softare and data. It's all running on SSDs now so I thought I'd take the opportunity to start from scratch.

I'd be very nervous of that first sync with a new installation of iTunes, the worry being, it will sync from the PC to the phone, thus wiping the data from the phone, rather than the other way around.

I think I'd be more tempted to export the data from Outlook, and try to import those files into WLM - but I've no idea if that would work!

I agree, it could all end in tears. I'll let you know how it goes although it might be a few days before I get that far.

This of any use? https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/windows-live-hotmail-push/id446057931?mt=8

I'm not sure but I'll certainly take a look at it, thanks Glenn :)

One thing I have discovered is that iTunes content sync is one way, computer to phone. I'm now looking at plan B!

After wasting more time than I care to think about I've come to the conclusion that Windows Live Mail is only suitable if you are starting from scratch. Uninstalled!
