Going to change home phone to IDNET - bit of advice please?

Although I have been on the internet for years I have doggedly stuck with BT for my phone. My internet is on the same line but not with BT of course. The latest round of BT phone increases have made me decide to finally dump them, so I'd be grateful for a bit of advice as I have never done this before.

Last year I prepaid my BT phone line rental for 12 months to save a bit and this is due to expire on 15th December. Is it simply a matter of logging onto IDNet and requesting service from 16th December? Am I right in thinking that IDNet will handle the cessation of the BT side of things or do I need some sort of MAC/PAC code, or should I not contact BT at all.

Finally when would be the best time to do all this so that I don't incur another months line rental from BT?

Sorry to appear a bit dim but this is the first time I am about to change landline provider.

I'd be tempted to talk to IDNet about the best time to make the switch.  Presumably you don't have a contract issue with BT, as it was pre-paid, and IDNet usually deal with everything when transferring the line rental. 

Personally, I would cancel any direct debits to BT though, in case they still try to take another year's worth.

Thanks Simon. I don't think there is a contact issue with BT but point taken about direct debit.

I now seem to remember reading somewhere that it is the new provider that talks to BT about the change and my doing so will cause problems for myself

Well, you certainly don't want to go out of your way to talk to BT.  Let some other bugger do it!

I've had my phone with iDNet for a while now... There's nothing to it really.

Because you have internet with them you will get a small discount if you ask, at the point of ordering. As far as I remember you get to choose the date it transfers and in all honesty, the line rental plus package works out cheaper than BT's line rental full stop. Or at least mine does...

Have a chat with them to sort out your particulars. You could do a lot worse, i.e. stay with BT.

Thanks RandomGeeza. I moved my internet to another provider a couple of years ago but will probably use IDNet for phone and bring my internet back at the same time.
