I'm shopping around for a new Laptop, I don't really want to spend more than £500 though.

I have come across this one...
http://www.medion.com/gb/shop/intel-core-i5-laptops-medion-akoya-p6647-laptop-md98728-30017141a1.html

and this one...
http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.MLBEK.001-Acer-Aspire-E5-571G_1663245.html

Would anyone have any comments, advice or further suggestions from recent experience, please?

They look very similar in terms of specs to me!

I'd say they both look OK for the money - the Medion slightly edges it on spec.

IIRC, Medion is Aldi's usual brand name for electronics.

It is, owned by Lenovo. The only Medion netbook I've owned was fine, and my current Lenovo ultrabook is a cracking bit of kit.

About two years ago my Acer netbook developed a fault.   Acer customer service was very unhelpful. They also would not help the local computer repair man and I finished up paying a charge for no progress. I therefore do not recommend Acer.

I had quite a few HP laptops become cracking bits of kit... but not in the good way! :O

No experience from Acer, but AFAIK most other brands require return (or collection) to manufacture for repairs. Our store is not allowed to touch laptops on warranty (so I agree it can be hard to get a local store/repairman) but I can understand they only want quality parts and known repairers doing the work.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.
