It seems from El Reg that the first service pack for Vista has been delayed until 2009.  ::)

I read that, Lance. Seems odd to wait two years for SP1, but then we waited a long time for Vista itself. Talking of which, have you got the new lappy yet?

Hope the lappy is faster than the delivery service Lance.  ;D ;D

It's not the delivery, the lappy is being hand-crafted from a solid block of titanium... ;)

Indeed it is Rik! The delivery is next day, it's just getting them to make the thing in the first place that's the problem!

It did get delayed for a few days becuase their system had an issue with delivery being to a different address to the billing address for some reason!

The day of the service pack has largely come and gone. When you look at service packs they are generally just a "roll-up" of previously issued patches. These were vital in the days of slow internet access as it wasn't reasonable to expect systems to automatically update monthly. It is still useful to issue Service Packs to allow reinstallation from dvd with a simple update to a specific point of patch releases, saving the user the pain of multiple updates once the base OS has been installed. Instead of all this talk of service packs perhaps MS should provide a simple "Patch roll-up" for download say every three months.
