Slow link to USA servers ?

I have tried a lot of test files form USA servers and only get up to 4MB download speeds on a 40mb down fibre line ?  It is worse on my girlfriend PC , she is on sky DSL, she only gets 300-600k/sec on a 16mb line.

I was trying to download a file from a USA server which was going 60k/sec.  What I did in the end was to download the file on my VPS server (in NewYork) and it rocketed down on there.

So really just wondering why UK seems to have such a slow link to the USA ?  I'm sure the speeds were not this slow a few years ago. Seems like there is a huge bottleneck somewhere ?

Actually, also, I have been trying EU servers and they seem slow as well, including some UK ones I tested.  speedtest.net shows 37mb download speeds, so its not my line. So whats going on ?

Looks like telia.net is to blame.

Let's get the units right first.

4MB (megabytes) a second is correct for a 40Mb (megabit) per second link. I don't for the moment think you have a millibit (mb) connection.

oops, yep, i totally forgot byte and bit.  So my line is actually good on telia.net then  :thumb:

I've been talking to my VPS host about it, seems the fault on sky is the GTT servers. The swapped my connection over to GTT for a few moments for me to try and the speed crashed down so that seems to be the problem.
