Ping

In the days when I had ADSL I consistently got a Ping of around 27ms - not good but not as bad as it could be. 

I'm now on FTTC and for curiosity tried a Ping to idnet.net and found I'm still getting around 30ms.  I'm not a gamer so perhaps it doesn't matter, but I've always had the impression that it should be significantly better when using a fibre connection.

Am I right or is this about par for the course?

My experience has been that you would expect to see a drop under those circumstances.

A lot can depend on what router/modem combo and cab you are on, there has been issues with G.inp on Huawei cab using ECI modems and its now being re-rolled out with G.inp on downstream only. If you get an all in VDSL2 router and modem make sure it can do G.inp and G.fast as well as that is on its way too supposedly next year.  ::).

Could also be interleaving or is that no longer used under G.INP?

I'm currently using a Draytek 2760 all-in-one on a Huawei cabinet which does have G.INP switched on.  The current Draytek firmware doesn't use G.INP or vectoring but there are some beta versions available which do.  The Zyxel I tried did have G.INP switched on and TBH it didn't appear to make much difference to speeds but I didn't check the ping times whilst using it. 

I've been a bit wary of the Draytek Beta stuff although I must admit I didn't think using it might affect the ping times.  Might be worth a shot.

It'll take the DSLAM a while (~24h I think!) to recognise that there's something at the other end that is G.INP capable. It will then switch to a G.INP profile rather than the fallback situation for a non-G.INP capable device.

Edit: @Tacitus, If you're interested ( or need some light bedtime reading :) ) then there's a lengthy thread on the PN forums here http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,136287.0.html discussing G.INP and the consequences with various modem/routers, not sure if there's a Draytek mention though...
