Having just rebuilt the software on my computer and upgraded to 8.1, which was quite an effort, I have now been offered (as all other have) Windows 10. If I download it will I be able to easily revert to 8.1 if I have problems?

Only for 30 days, after that it stays as Windows 10

As Glenn says, you have 30 days to roll back to the previous version of Windows. To cover yourself, think seriously about making an ISO backup copy of your W8.1 before installing W10. Then you always have the option of reverting to W8.1 (although with 8.1 why would you??)
Make sure you get rid of as much dross as you can before making the ISO copy, like doing a disc cleanup, emptying recycle bin etc.

Wel I bit the bullet and have installed 10, all seems well to this point.

Does the download come just to the computer that requested it?. I want to try it on my netbook and see how key software works but my desktop is on most of the time and I only want it on the netbook. Microsoft suggest it will download in the background

Only if the netbook is running Home or Pro versions of Win 7 or 8.1 I believe. It's a staged release so not all machines will get it at the same time.

Thanks for the advice. Very slow process but finally installed it. However software problems , but reinstall of Win 7 went very smoothly.

Another question on 10. I had a display of my programs, now it has defaulted to the annoying display as Window 8. Not very well expressed, but how do I return to the original display?

You haven't inadvertently switched it to Tablet Mode have you BB, if you have you need to go to Settings- Tablet mode and change the slider control to Off.

Conversely, if you mean that the Start screen is a small vertical rectangle in the bottom left, rather like Windows 7 or 8 with custom shell, and you want it in a full window, go to Settings/Personalisation/Start/Use Start full screen.
