I'm considering a file server (nas basically), but mainly for local convenience and to "learn" (though all I'm likely to learn is "do not attempt to run a server" :P ). I might consider using it as a remote file store when and if I take a laptop out and about. I'd not try email or anything like that though.

I have always activated stealthed ports etc. Only opening/forwarding when required. Though learning that routers are quite hackable is not good.

Sorry to wake an old thread (and I've not come back to IDNet) but I have a possible explanation for this incident. My current ISP's system woke up at the weekend and activated their firewall. It seems it was because I have an Open DNS resolver. A little research and I've found this:

So I'm posting this here to help 'future generations' :)

Thanks for the update.   :)

So someone was using your router to "forward" requests and stuff, causing a DDoS somewhere?

The sent requests to your router, but with someone else's "return" address?

Very cheeky.  :P
