...do you use / have used?

I thought it might be interesting to find out which router/s people have experience of to share with others.

I know Lance has a thread on his new router the 2700 HGV, but it wouldn't seem fair to keep side tracking that thread.

To start, my current one is a Zyxel P-660-HW which I got from Amazon for £29.99 delivered including a USB Wi Fi Dongle.

Excellent results, fast connection, rock solid, not sure about how good it is on poor lines though.

I also have a now dated BT 2100, that works fine, but seems slower than the Zyxel, not so good performance on wireless connection.

Also, I have a Talk Talk ( yeah I know ) .. which is really a Phillips 5600, again it came with a free Wi fi Dongle, I seem to recall it was around £25 from eBuyer, updated software ..it works fine.

So what have got?

What is good / bad?
Anything and everything that I post on here is purely my opinion, it ain't going to change the world, you are under no obligation to agree with me, it is purely my expressed opinion.

I had a Draytek Vigor 2600+, which was excellent with a fixed rate service, but overkill for my needs. It was not very good when I moved to Max, however (kept losing sync), and I moved on to a Netgear DG834v2, which worked very well. Consequently, when I wanted to add wireless, I just moved to a DG834G v3, same chipset.

I have a mind to try the 2700 at some point, but haven't got there yet.

Buffalo WBMR G51
and
Edimax AR6024 WGA.

Both have worked flawlessly. I ran the Edimax for 18 months rarely switching it off.  Then a couple of months ago bought the Buffalo thinking I might squeeze a little more out of my line but the results have been very similar.  No drop outs with either and continuous connections for days on end.
Extremely happy with both. Strong  wireless signals to one PC using an Edimax wifi card(PCI) the other PC connected by cable.

Well, as Inactive has said, I'm currently using the 2wire/ BT 2700HGV. Prior to that, I was using the Linksys HG200, which was a "Tesco special" of one of their mainstream routers.

The 2700HGV is now up to 12 days 6 hours without loss of connection. A miracle on my line!

I may need a miracle soon, my line is degrading - 55db d/s attenuation when I joined IDNet, increased to 56db in April, now to 57db. I'll be on dial-up next year at this rate. :(

I found that moving from the Linksys to the 2wire decreased my attenuation by 5db. Although this is most likely because the Linksys was starting to develop a fault!

I tried my other Netgear in the test socket, Lance, and it gives the same figure, so I suspect one or more joints are playing up. Of course, I'm still above FTR at the moment, so BT are unlikely to do anything.

Im hoping the next router after my speedtouch 580 will be a draytek vigor. They look hawwwt.

I dont know if the belkin etc. are any good - they all seem so commercial to me.

If pc world sells it...its not too good xD

Rik

I used to use a Vigor 2600+, Sam, before Max. It was extremely good, though way overkill for my needs. However... When I switched to Max, I found it didn't hold the line at all well and, following a recommendation from my friendly local BT engineer, I moved to the Netgear. So, if you think of going for a Draytek, try and borrow one first or at least negotiate the ability to return it.

I' m using a Speedtouch 585v6 on my cr*ppy long line.

Line Attenuation of 58

SN 8.5 During Day which normally drops to 7 at night

These figures are attained by using the DMT Tool and gives me a stable connection speed of 3680kbps. If I reset the DMT to defaults the highest I can connect at is 4224kbps which is fine during the day but can be prone to drop outs in the evening.
I was using the Speedtouch 585v5 prior to this which was nowhere near as stable.
