Aarrgh! Spring Updates threatened for Windows 10

The next version of Windows 10 looks set to shake things up in the way people switch between devices, and now, reportedly, has a name: Spring Creators Update.  With Windows 10 being the "final" version of Windows, updates like this are essentially the new versions, with the recent Creators Update, and then the Fall (autumn) Creators Update each bringing big new features and revisions. So what does the next version of Windows 10 have in store?

The idea is that you no longer need to worry about things you haven't saved, simply being able to see what you were working on, in which apps and at what time.

For me the update should be named 'Windows 10 - Desperation', providing answers to problems I've never had once in my entire lifetime.

So far on 4 Windows 10 Pro PC's I've never had an issue with the updates. When I upgraded to W10, the first thing I did was a wipe and install from scratch on each machine.

I think that was probably a wise decision, Glenn.  I think a lot of people, myself included, took the easy route and upgraded from Windows 8.1, and it may be that that's created some additional complications.  That said, to be honest, I've not had much of a problem with any of the upgrades, it's just the frequency, and the inconvenience of them seeming to happen just when you want to use the computer for something simple, which I find frustrating.

I have to admit, I don't like Windows 10 or the direction it's taking. I want an operating system to run in the background but it's always in my face for one reason or another.

I do have issues with updates causing loss of function and I detest the notification centre. It tells me I have emails that I've downloaded, read and deleted. It tells me it's performed automated tasks. It tells me that it can't connect to a printer that's not in use. It randomly asks me what I want to do with iPhones and CDs that get plugged in/inserted multiple times a day. It's a prime example of a solution to problem that doesn't exist just like the up and coming Timeline function.

You can now use a two finger swipe gesture to dismiss all notifications in the Action Center.

Ok. I really should not. But sometimes I have to. Windows 10 is that bad, I dreamt I was offered a Windows 10 Laptop, and was so offended I stormed out the room. 

I think I might invent a new allergy, one specifically to Windows software numbered 10!

To be honest I think Microsoft are at risk of going the way of the dinosaur. They clearly develop on desktop devices with old school, desktop mentality, something which plagues the software industry. Forum software is a prime example of this. It's developed on PCs for PCs leaving mobile devices as an afterthought. With the majority of people now connecting via mobile devices devices that's clearly a mistake.

My phone will instantly switch between multiple audio I/O devices without me having to dig into the OS, something Windoze still can't manage even with this update.

That might actually help. Me uncle has a headset, with mic, and wants to use the front panel. But plugging it in/out does not auto swap correctly, the drivers get stuck in one or the other (headphone or speaker).

Is it just me? The April update loaded onto my two computers and are superb. Task View is such a good addition and the whole update runs so well.

I'd be inclined to avoid it until Microsoft roll out the bug fix patch next Tuesday, especially if you are a chrome user.

I'm not holding my breath waiting for that patch as I don't use Chrome. I like Edge and find it so easy to use.

Everyone that I know only use edge once per install, that's to download another browser.

Mine installed ok, it downloaded quickly but took about 4 hours in total to decompress and install but perhaps my PC is now showing it's age (It's an i5 Ivy Bridge 3.10GHz with turbo up to 3.50GHz built by Scan for me in 2012 with 4GB of RAM)

I prefer Windows 10 to Apple IOS and prefer Edge to other browsers but that's because they keep improving it with each Windows update.

To my shame both my wife and I own iPads but I prefer Windows 10 on my desktop.

Her iPad is switched on every night but my desktop is turned on 1st thing in the morning and turned off when I go to bed.

One of my two laptops running W10 Home Edition (x64) - the newer one, is in the constant cycle of update downloads which all stall at 99% install. Have followed all the advice I can find on the web without success. It's  eating up my hard drive with twelve attempts at downloads to date, otherwise I can ignore it. I've tried waiting for several weeks but MS really are trying my patience.

I'm convinced they do it to force you to buy a licence, their "free" upgrades are nothing but.

I've finally resorted to some xml code from a dubious site which offers to get rid of Windows automatic Updates for ever, out of desperation. Will see how it goes. A hobsons choice between b*ggering the os and throwing the hardware in the bin! Current suspicion is falling on the Radeon display software where I foolishly accepted an update which won't complete and they offer no option to revert. So looks like a choice between an os and a screen display. Brilliant.

Long live the Vista PC on which I'm writing this (and still do most things). It's nice, simple; and seems immortal, tempting fate. MS just seem to want to make life so hard and complicated, it becomes impossible, but I suppose keeps the political masters happy - their First Commandment being that you can get away with anything in the name of security- and it all makes work for you lot!

have you just gone into windows/software distribution and deleted everything in the downloads folder in there,that usually works?
also if you got to control panel and go into troubleshooting then click on view all,there is a long list of helps/and fixits that pop up

yep, followed both without making any difference over the several weeks I had this problem. The issue I think is that I took the free "Home" upgrade from w8 originally, so i don't even have the option to defer the automatic upgrade as the option is ineffective. I'm not encouraged to buy a full w10 with all the hassle, even at the discount now available. But the good news is that so far, over a couple of days, the script to disable windows updates seems to be working, though (it may be academic) I'm not sure about the way to re-enable them if Microsoft ever sort their act out (probably equally unlikely). As far as I can see plenty of others have this problem, and no one has yet found a solution that appears to work for everyone, even disconnecting the peripherals or a clean reinstall. MS support sound as bewildered as the rest of us and have gone very quiet on those of us with continuing problems once we reach the end of their troubleshooting script.

you don't need to buy a full version you can download a copy of the version you have installed and do a full reinstall of it for no charge
go to settings/update and recovery/more recovery options,you will be given the option to start fresh with a new install
