I have recently bought a new computer because my old win 7 comp is getting a bit creaky, but of course the new one comes with Win 10, HELP!! :bawl:
It took me all morning to get through the startup and get a screen with icons on it, but now I'm stuck, I cant even see how to make a shortcut let alone load my software on to it . Is there a knowledge base somewhere I can tap into with novice like instructions I can understand, to get me off the starting blocks ?
PLEASE :'(

Ray

Have a look on this Forum it's entirely devoted to Windows 10, Talos, they've got loads of Tutorials and a lot of helpful knowledgable people if you're stuck with anything:- https://www.tenforums.com/

Yes,

Bought a lappy for her indoors, but hate W10.

Currently dual booting a 10 yr old gaming pc with Linux Mint Mate 19.1. Brilliant. Migrating everything to that and will abandoned Windows.

Can't believe how it all just "worked"!

A linux convert.

If you want a proper Start button and menu rather than all of your screen covered in tiles try Open-Shell (https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu/releases).  Makes things work like a proper computer as far as an old fart like me is concerned.

Update

Still not got to grips with win10, nearly ready to chuck comp out of a high building, IMOH its the most unfriendly illogical system .
I think Ill do a clean install of win7, anybody know of avoidable pitfalls in doing that ?
Please

Simon

Why not go to Windows 8.1?  That's what I have in mind with my Windows 7 machine when support is withdrawn next January.  There's not really much point in doing a clean installation of Windows 7 now, when there's only a few months shelf life left in it.

For someone like the OP I would hazard a guess that 8.1 is even more of a disaster area than 10.

Perhaps it's a device dependant problem. My PC which I upgraded from win7 to 10 a long time ago runs in much the same way as it did on 7. I'm not running anything in addition to change the interface but I have a start button which left clicks to an A-Z of installed programs and left clicks to a systems menu. I do have half a dozen tiles that hang off the right hand side of the start menu but that's purely for convenience.

My limited memory is that Microsoft did at one stage remove the start button functionality with win8 but restored it back in in 8.1?

I think Windows 8.1 introduced the tiles, but you had an option to revert to a normal type Desktop.  What it didn't have was all this "We're going to do this", and "We're going to do that", cr*p which comes with Windows 10.

Apart from the somewhat redundant notification centre I think I've managed to remove all that.

Talking about the somewhat redundant notification centre ;D, it appears to have a 'Tablet mode' tile (bottom left). Could that be the problem here, the OS is running in tablet mode?

I've got my head around some of Win 10 mainly using workarounds , but I cannot get the email working right Outlook is a disaster, what happened to the old Hotmail? and old Outlook,  I have tried to load the old versions which work perfectly on my old Win7 computer into the new but it just wont have it.  It seems at times that it is forcing me to do what they want not what I want and I find the setups so confusing. As I get older my brain is not so sharp so a new system like this is a nightmare.
Linux looks good, but the main problem is that its a new setup to get to grips with as is 8.1 so I cant see myself any better off,  Win7 I understand (almost) , and it wont stop working when they withdraw support will it?    Are there any good all round mail servers I can try which will handle multiple Email addresses, automatic setup preferred  :-\

Windows 7 won't stop working, but there won't be any more security patches, so it will gradually get more and more vulnerable as time goes on.  Also, you will eventually find that programs such as anti-virus software won't update on Windows 7 any longer, leaving your machine even more open to threats.

I can't see what peoples problem is with Win 10, If you want more control over the updates, buy a Win 10 Pro licence from an online auction site, it will allow the updates to be deferred. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026834/windows-10-defer-feature-updates

I also think that a lot of issues are caused by the detritus they have had on their PC when they upgraded. As far as I'm concerned the best way to upgrade is a full clean install Backup and Restore is an easy feature to use to save docs etc https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17127/windows-back-up-restore

I had a Ford Prefect back in early 1960s. It had three forward gears and no heater but I loved it and then I had to move up to a Austin A40 with four gears and a heater but I forced myself to adapt. These days cars have six gears and air conditioning but we manage.

Just take the time to adapt, I loved widows 95 (and the Amiga) and have used every Windows system since but I love Windows 10 Pro even more.  ;D
