I am categorically never ever buying a bit of Apple tech ever.  People can say "you missed the point" or "you did not read" or "you did not research" but no. Apple litterally labeled their buttons wrong and I'm livid.

I told a friend I don't do Apple, but to some people every "computer" is exactly the same, even though *they* don't know anything, I must. So the mug I am I offered to help when they said they wanted to sell their old iPad. I *specifically* chose "erase all personal data" instead of "factory reset" because I did not want their iCloud to log back in.

Guess what?

Yes, the iCloud logs you back in from your Apple account as soon as it gets wifi when the new user turns it on.

So I go to the Apple account. The erasure details warn that a new user might not be able to use the iPad. So I don't do that (we already *did* erase it, but that's besides the point). So I use the logout button... except Apple in their vast superiority don't label the button, and instead just have an X somewhere.

But somehow they now are saying it's still not logged out. So am I to believe, shock, for about the third time, the button labeled "log out" (or not even labeled) does not actually *do what everyone says it does*?

How is this "it just works"? How is Apple "user friendly" when I only seem to get people asking for help with it?!
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

I always do a full factory reset when handing these devices on as you never know what data they are saving otherwise, and they can also maintain links to other devices via the cloud.

My guess is that although you are logging out of the Apple account, it's 'remembering' the login details and automatically logging in.

No, that's the thing. It's not remembering anything. The full erasure probably is exactly that. However...

As far as I can tell, it's a push request from the cloud to the iPads mac address with your credentials if you don't log out first/delete it from iCloud. First time I've seen a device with a full erasure get that treatment. :(

As I repeatedly typed in the OP, we specifically chose "erase" and typed in the password. At no point did it suggest the iCloud/account would be loaded back on. This is why I hate current UI which dropped "help" icons in about Android 6.0 and turned off text for random shaped icons (what's 3 lines, what is 3 dots, what does a circle even do? etc). So how were we to know "erasure" did not actually... log you out/unregister of iCloud too. :(

PS, this also seems a recent change in iOS 10 or so. Previously it did log it out/unregister as I've seen a couple more on Apples forums saying similar for their iPhones.

When iPhone restarts with all content and settings erased, you have the option to set up iPhone as new or restore it from a backup. See Turn on and set up iPhone.
This is what we did. But it's still showing the login/account. And even asked for the pin apparently. :(

I kind of get where you are coming from. I find Apple products to just work 99% of the time but that other 1% results in complete and utter frustration. Ironically the last occurrence resulted in a total and permanent loss of all data while trying to backup an iPhone :facepalm:

Apple have only gone and done it again with the iOS 14 update!!!!

Update from 12 to 13 resulted in 3 or 4 months of No Service and dropped connections - then finally they fixed 13

Phone updated to 14 as I needed to see what it would look like as I WAS thinking of replacing my wife's old Samsung A3 with an iPhone.

BUT...........Once again my phone is showing No Service where it (eventually) used to just work with iOS 13.

So back in the drawer with the iPhone and out with my 2014 Galaxy S4 running Lineage 9 (Android 9 equivalent) - and I suspect the end of my road with bl****dy APPLE!!
If we tell people their brain is an app - they might actually start to use it.

No issues with iPhone 11 Pro on iOS 14 and iPhone 12 Pro on iOS 14.1 runs fine too. Maybe you should do a DFU restore, but the intel modems are not that great in iPhone X to 11 Pro but not that bad as to cause no signal. I think its more your phones as its not all over the forums.

Never heard of a DFU restore - info on iFixit looks straightforward. Nothing to loose so I'll give it a whirl. Thanks for the tip.

Well - that had all the qualities of a real waste of time.
1. Hunt down spare machine
2. Install Windows 10
3. Install iTunes.............?

WFT? Install a media player to handle a phone reset????

Watch the videos on U-Chube, do the same, finally after n number of goes iTunes reports it has found a phone in DFU mode and offers to restore.

I can see it is downloading stuff - presumably the latest iOS (again).
6 hours later nothing has happened.
Return phone to normal mode - iTunes warns me it hasn't completed blah blah blah. It hasn't even started!

What a crock of stuff..................back in the drawer again

OK - Round 3
Reinstalled Windows 10 - let it run all it's updates (October 2019 installer)
Install iTunes
Connect phone - which has already had iCloud backup.
Thinks - there's another backup tool in iTunes.
Run iTunes backup
Eventually get phone into DFU mode.
Run wipe/restore.

Yes of course I would use VLC to back up and restore my mobile phone :slap:  :dunno:  :)x

It all works fine in so far as I'm back to a refreshed phone with all my stuff.
However still No Service where pre ios 14 it was good - as in iOS 13 good - update - iOS14 bad.

Maybe a later update will fix it - with 13 it took 3 months before it was usable.

It wouldn't be so bad if they made the iOS13 images available for more than 5 minutes after iOS 14 was released but sadly no signed images are to be found.

Thanks. Turns out it was eventually reset remotely, but needed to be plugged into a PC/mac for a factory reset from iTunes, and I assume the new buyer did not have access to a pc. Back up on ebay now, fully reset, but sadly the market is flooded now Apple released new models a couple of weeks after the original sale.  :slap:

Oh well. :P

PS I feel you for iOS 14 breaking reception. My spare android phone I run the internet off now got a "security update" which I thought would be fine to install. Turns out the latest android code crashes tethering. What's the chances that was the last update that model ever gets? Joy (though I could possibly jail break/custom os it I guess).
