I've not really checked my internet connection speed for a while.  I've just checked today I'm syncing at 1024, I normally Sync around 4300.

Now I suspect my internet has been around this speed for maybe a week, since I don't remember downloading any higher than 100kbs for some time now.

I haven't gone over my bandwidth limit this month or anything.  I've changed nothing regarding my phone line or setup within my house.

On the plus side my SNR Margin is 29.5 down 16 up which means I'm not getting d/c much which has always been a bit of a problem for me.

Still when I pay for 8mb and usualy get around 4mb you can understand I'm pretty miffed right now.  Too late to phone IDnet tonight so just quickly does anyone on these forums have any ideas?

My friend also in the same street has been syncing at low speeds but he is on BT not IDnet.  Could be an exchange problem?

Going over your bandwidth on IDNet does not cause throttling as IDnet do not throttle

You actually pay for adslMAX which is UP TO 8MB but guarantees only speeds up to that according to line conditions, distance from exchenge etc.

My friend also in the same street has been syncing at low speeds but he is on BT not IDnet.  Could be an exchange problem?

It could be an exchange problem or lines from your exchange.

I would suggest you contact IDNet in the morning and get them to look into it for you.  You may get more advice here just keep an eye out.

I know I can't expect 8mb.  I'm just used to referring to the adslmax package as 8mb.

I've been on IDnet for closing on a year now and am familiar with the kinds of speeds and SNR margins my line gets and I assure you 1mb is far from normal for me.

Can anyone point me in the direction or a file, any file really hosted on a server they know for a fact to be very very fast so I can check my speed with the actual transfer of a file?

Thanks,

It does sound as though there could be a problem with your line or exchange somewhere.  As I say, maybe best to try and get IDNet to look into it as they seem to acheive some good results.

I think you can download a file from one of the news servers to check the actual speed but, sorry, I can't remember which one it is.  Perhaps someone on this foru would know.

Yeah I will phone them tomorrow for sure.  Just thought I might have found a few answers on here, I always like to try and resolve things my self first or at least make sure I have double checked everything.

Hopefully someone will crop up with that file for me to test.  Thanks matey.

I know it's simple, but have you tried rebooting the router?

The reason i ask is because you have a extremely high noise margin. To me this suggests that you had a low sync event but now the line has recovered and has plenty of headroom. When you reboot, it will negotiate a new sync speed, taking into account the current conditions.

Well I have rebooted the modem just now but my reboot was as a result of a new firmware update.  It syncs at 4300 again now but I don't know if its the firmware or reboot thats done it.

Still I've not seen my download speed exceed 100kbs so if someone could point me in the direction of a guaranteed fast host with a file any file so I can check this out.

Thanks Lance.

This Ubuntu ISO download has a very fast host.

I've just tried it for a few of minutes and it didn't go below 700KB/s.  Probably true for most Linux distros though.

Yup not gone above 90kbs.  Phone call first thing in the morning :)

thanks everyone

Please bear in mind that your profile (which dictates your download speed) can take up to 5 days to rise match your sync. Your profile should eventually increase to 3500 at your current sync speed.

My guess is that it was the reboot which caused you to sync higher - what is your noise margin now?

What O/S is being used?  It sounds as if your packets are being de-fragmented.
If XP, check RWin and MTU.  Howto's are in Riks FAQs (I think :-\).

Mo,

Can I ask why you think they are being fragmented?

I think I must have missed something!

6.5 down 17up which is about normal for me.

Still synced around 4300.  Downloading faster today but still far from normal.

When you say reboot what are you referring to?  a reboot of what?

I suspect Lance is talking about rebooting the router. I agree with his surmise, in all probability you have had a low sync event. Now you have restored your sync speed to its normal level, you will need to wait for up to 5 days for the profile to catch up. IDNet will not be able to speed the process up.

Purely previous experience Lance.
I obviously don't know the level of experience of the op in question.  But as you know a lot of users do not know of such settings.  As long as it works they are happy.  Till things slow down.
Also sometimes new routers or old ISPs have necessitated (puts teeth back) settings a lot different to the norm.

If you move your MTU to extremes it will slow things till it stops altogether.

You were talking of sync speed and profile, he had changed I thought to talking about his actual speed downloading files.

Thanks Mo!

I had been thinking purely along the lines that his actual download speed was low due to his low sync in turn causing a low profile.
