Moved House, I'm confused (and upset)

OK, basically:

Tuesday 14th - informed BT we were moving house on Friday 17th.  They said we couldn't keep our number as we were changing exchange.  The house we moved to is new, so had to pay for the installation.  We were given an install date (for the phone line) of the Saturday 18th am (pretty good really).  I was also told that IDNet participate in the simultaneous move scheme and to give them the order number for broadband to be activated the same day.

Thursday 16th - called IDNet to inform them, they said that Saturday was too soon for the simultaneous move as it needed 5 days to make things happen.  They said I would need to cease my existing service, and ring them back with the new line details when it was active.  I ceased the service (which would take effect 24th)

Also on the Thursday, got an SMS from BT saying the new number had been connected already (wow!)

Friday 17th - called IDNet who said the number wasn't on the broadband database yet and to call back or use the website over the weekend.

Placed the order on IDNet site on Saturday pm which went through, stating in the notes that I was moving account from my old phone number to this new one.  Got a confirmation on Monday to say activation would be 28th August.  Login details were the same, as was the IP address.

However, now it is Tuesday, I plugged my router in at the new address, and I am online!

So, obviously I will call IDNet in the morning to find out the situation but what has happened?  Any ideas?

Also, not sure about my speed, map shows me quite close to the exchange, but I am getting average 1900kbps connection.

Belkin router says:

                          Downstream         Upstream

Data rate         8128                     448

Noise margin     6.5                           19.0

Output power     19.8                          11.9

Attenuation       36.0                    20.5

Is there anything I should be looking at doing, we currently only have one socket in the house, so I presume it's the master with best chance of stronger signal.

Thanks, hope this will not prove too much of a useless post.

The first thing is to check your BRAS profile. This will tell you, but beware - it is somewhat clunky! You'll need to persevere.

Nothing to be upset about, you got lucky.

BT are famous for messing up and dragging connections out for weeks, you got yours on time and BT must have been firing on all cylinders having also passed the information back to Idnet quickly which resulted in you getting your adsl connection a week early.

Your stats are going to make a lot of people here jealous ,you have the maximum possible synch speed, the only downside is the downstream speed which may well improve, being a new max line you have a 10 day training period to go through.

Do the test Colirv posted (BT Speed test) and post all the results here.

Lance

My guess is that throughout the 10 day training period your speed will improve. Like Dorset says, you have the maximum possible sync so assuming that you have no line problems your profile will increase over the next 5 days.

During the 10 day period BT won't accept any possible problems and therefore IDNet can't investigate and such problems.

It sounds like you have been given a 2000 profile, pretty much standard on a new Max connection. As others have said, it should improve over the next few days.

Thanks guys

I should have figured it was a profile thing.  I'll try the connection test when I get home, then wait a couple of weeks for improvement.

I'll keep you posted.

Mark, I'm a new member here and my profile was like yours at first.  The first thumbnail is the day after IDNet set up the connection and the second was recently.

I see your latency improved too, Noreen. :)

That seems to vary, Rik. To be honest I don't really understand the significance of it, I know that it seems to bother online gamers  but I don't play online games.

Rik

TBH, Noreen, unless pings get very slow, they have no great significance to non-gamers - a useful diagnostic in the main. :)

BT Speedtester says I'm on the 2000 profile.

How long do I have to wait until I am put on the correct profile?  Can I ask for it to be altered?

Thanks

Mark,

A newbie here myself, in fact, I've not even joined yet, as I'm still awaiting a MAC code from my current ISP, however, I did ask a similar question the other day, and it seems, once you have allowed the 10 day 'bedding in' period, if things are still not right, you should contact IDNet support, who will try to help you, and they will raise the issue with BT if appropriate.

OK, today I received my activation confirmation from IDNet.  Hopefully I can look to start getting my profile sorted in the near future.

Very annoying thing, our house is a new house, and the electrician came to connect the other telephone points in the house.  Since his visit, my router hasn't synced above 5600.  I presume this can only be something at this end, and would be too much of a coincidence to be something else.  I'm going to have to disconnect all the other sockets in the house, and check the front plate connection of the master socket to find out where the problem is.

Grr.

Hi Mark,

If you plug the router directly into the test socket (detach the lower third of the master socket and you'll find it) this detaches all internal wiring. If you do this and have a look at your stats then, you should be able to confirm that the problem is in your wiring.

All I can think of is to remove the ring wire from all sockets, usually orange/white, always in terminal 3. Hopefully this should help minimise noise pickup on the line.

Rik will be back in the morning, and he knows more about the wiring then I do :)

Hi Mark

Electricians often use alarm cable, or fail to pair the wires. Have a look in one of the new sockets, what colours are the connected wires, and what terminals are they connected to?

As Lance says, if you try connecting at the test socket, that will eliminate the wiring, so if the problem goes away, you know where to look.

Good luck.

Router plugged into the test socket, now syncing at 8128 again.

Bloody electricians, gonna have to get soe kit now.  I only really need the 1 socket working in the lounge for sky.  Will take a look in the remote sockets, and compare the wiring in the master terminations and might get back to you for more help.

Thanks,

One good point, my profile now seems to be a bit more dynamic, tonight's speedtest shows 6602 download.

Now to that wiring...

At least it looks like you have found the problem, Mark, which is half the battle won.  :)

Unless you have multi-room, which seems unlikely from what you say, Sky don't police the phone connection, so you might want to just disconnect...

Probably what I'll do, don't use box office or the like which I understand requires the phoneline.

Might be interested in the remote record functionality though, so might need to look into it anyway.

For now, I'm just gonna use the test socket.

And thanks for the welcome, it's actually my second time around, but I'll take all meets and greets with pleasure!

Hi Mark

Like you, I don't need the phone line, so I've left it disconnected. AFAIK, once you've set up the remote record facility, you don't need the phone line for that, it's done via the satellite.

Agreed Rik, no requirement for phone line to be connected to Sky.
