Im thinking of biting the bullet in a few hours, and getting rid of my XP system, and running vista.

With my recent upgrade, im hoping it will run "well" - but more to the point, i now havea  couple of DX10 games, which id like to try...

...however SPF doesent support vista, and im hardly likely to trust windows firewall...

What vista firewalls are out there? Free or otherwise...

Thanks :)

Rik

ISTR that the next version of the free Comodo firewall will support Vista, not sure what already does - Norton probably!!  >:D

I think the vista firewall is a much improved effort on the XP firewall (I say think because I've not had a chance to dig about in it yet). I'm comfortable using it and sitting behind a router.

Hi,
I've been running vista on a new laptop since February. I'm currently using the Windows Firewall. I'd rather used a more proactive firewall that tells me what is trying to "dial-out" but have decided to wait for comodo firewall to be available (version 3.0 - currently in beta). At the moment I'm happy to wait, especially as Vista offers other security features such as "User Account Control". My laptop came with Norton Internet Security installed (3 months trial) which lasted about an hour :) replaced with NOD32.

Unfortunately the Home versions of Vista are like the Home version on XP in that they don't have the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) so the advanced features mentioned in that article are not available to Vista Home users. When I have a moment, I'll have look to see if there are any alternatives to he gpedit method.

A bit more info for anyone wanting to see the advanced features of the Vista Firewall....

Click the Start menu and type wf.msc in the search box and press enter

Just don't ask me what any of it means!

I'm sitting behind Windows Defender and Firewall, and Nod 32.

No problems at all with Vista security.
