Android/Virgin WiFi issue

My sister has an issue which defies logic. If she's in the same room as her Virgin Hub and attempts to use her Android based phone there appears to be no signal. Calls will connect but there is no sound in either direction. However the further away she gets e.g. another room or preferably outside the house, the signal gets stronger and if she gets far enough away, everything is as it should be.

No one else in the house has this issue and it can't be replicated elsewhere. Any ideas?

Just a shot in the dark, but could the phone be connecting to the Virgin hub by Bluetooth, thinking it's a speaker?
