It's probably them doing it, to keep themselves in business!  I'm convinced that security software vendors 'leak' viruses, in the hope that we will then buy their software to clean our machines.

I wouldn't trust McAfee to tell me the time of day. On their blog they have published a video showing exactly how to exploit the sony rootkit (from their usb fingerprint doodar).  I know it's an easy exploit to use and that the information is probably available elsewhere, but I ask you, is it responsible for a security company to demonstrate this in such detail?

It always surprises me, when you trial a new spyware remover, it finds loads of things you didn't know you had, and that other spyware removers / detectors didn't find, then demands money from you before it will remove said items.  Just a con if you ask me, preying on the inexperienced / paranoid user. 

Some rogue spyware detectors actually plant stuff on your machine, then refuse to remove it without payment.
