Noreen

Has any progress been made with the Yahoo and Hotmail forum email problems?

Rik

Hi Noreen

Not that I know of. It would require a major re-write of the forum code (it affects all forums using SMF).

Does it?  I don't remember hearing about this.

So I was told, Simon. The Hotmail & Yahoo web interfaces blank the contents of messages from the forum mail, those with POP access don't have a problem. You don't, apparently, send the contents with your notifiers, only the links.

Simon

Well, we haven't had any comments / complaints, and yes, we do only send the links, otherwise it spoils the surprise!  ;D

Rik

The problem seems to affect the content. TBH, I've never seen the problem as I don't use Hotmail/Yahoo and I only use POP on the rest of my accounts.

I don't even know what you are all waffling on about?? ;)

Rik

If members use Hotmail or Yahoo email addresses for forum communications, then the body of the message is blank when viewed in webmail (but OK in POP3). This doesn't matter too much for routine notifications, but becomes a bit of a problem when people ask for a password reminder. :(

Thanks for that Rik, I do hate being left out in the cold, I use POP3 with my Hotmail Account, so I guess no such problem for me.   ;)

No, you should be just fine - in any case, I'd always email you a password reminder manually. :)

Hmm,I have membership of several SMF based forums and the Yahoo/Hotmail problem is one of acceptance due to spammers.

The emails get dropped or filtered, I have never seen them wiped of the text field.

Anyone using Yahoo and Hotmail or indeed any freemail service will find it increasingly hard to join web sites and forums as more admins by the day ban the use of freemail services.

I participate in a spammer email capture system and the list of banned email addresses grows by @500 per week and we are just one group.

It has come to the point now where the forum providers themselves are looking at a global ban on any free email address.

So Yahoo,Hotmail,Operamail,Gmail Freemail,e-mail .......... the list goes on.

Rik

I've come across a few forums that reject the free mail accounts, Dorset, and we were seeing reports of people having problem with the idnetfreemail addresses. You're right, in time I think forums will move to only accept 'owned' mail domains.

Rik,the problem is so great now that some companies in the states are putting blanket bans on ISP's as well.

AT+T and VERIO are banned by  many companies as they simply ignore all abuse complaints.

Free email accounts are the spammers favourite tool so a total ban makes life harder for them.

I have one guy,a well known porn spammer sending begging emails,"I am innocent please take me off your list"......... Thing is there is abundant proof that he is spamming porn and the proxies he uses (which often go through school servers) have been back traced to the original IP,so "JackieCds" stays on the ban list ;D ;D

Noreen

I was one of the members who was receiving blank emails from IDNet to my yahoo co.uk account. I belong to several forums and use the yahoo address with all of them with no problems. I would prefer not to use my idnet.com address which I otherwise keep for personal emails. So how do I solve this problem?

Rik

The easiest solution, Noreen, is to open a Google Mail account, these don't have the same issue as the Yahoo/Hotmail ones. It's a problem between SMF (the board software) and the mail providers, other forums using different software might not be affected.

You could also set up another idnet.com email address.

True. You can have any number of addresses, Noreen.

Gmail is on the anti spammers list so multiple Idnet email addresses would be the best bet.

Good thinking Lance, I had forgotten that option. ;)

Simon

If you just need an email to register for something, but won't need it again, then 10 Minute Mail is a good solution.  I frequently use it to register on forums, especially if I just want to see what they are like.  If I decide to stay, I can easily change the email in my profile to a more permanent one.

Rik

Useful suggestion, Simon. I keep a throwaway address on my domain for that purpose, but yours is more disposable. :)

Nice find Simon, the answer to Noreens problem it would seem.

Thanks for sharing..  ;)

Noreen

I think that having another IDNet address is probably the answer, I can't see that having a temporary email address is any good for the IDNetters forum admin to have to communicate with me.

No, but it's a useful bookmark for other things, where you only need a temporary address.  :)

Call it a draw. :)

If people do get caught out by it, they can email me, or contact IDNet and they will get in touch with me.
