Hi everybody.....

Recently I have been having problems with my internet connection in that if I have to restart my Router for any reason.  My router will sync but it doesn't retrieve my IP address Using DHCP.  Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem and how to solve it.

Rik

Hi Colin

Which router, do you have it set up to obtain the IP address automatically?

DHCP is for the allocation of IP addresses on your internal network, not for obtaining the address from the ISP. :)

First of all I want to say hi to everyone since this is my first post here, having just joined IDNet from Orange and what a joy the network is  ;D
I have a Netgear DG834G v3 Router with firmware version 4.01.28 and I have had similar problems, the router is set to automatically retrieve my IP address etc but I had a power outage on Saturday and alas my router is not protected by my ups but after the power came back again the router syncs but does not retrieve my IP address. Anyone have any ideas as to why? Even restarting the network wizard did not help, I had to restore my settings from my saved profile. Has anyone has an idea as to why this would be occurring as I have not come across this problem before?

Welcome to the forum, have a welcome karma :)

As for your problem, hopefully Rik will have a idea and should be about shortly. The only thing I can think of would be to restore factory settings and start fresh.

Thanks for the karma  ;D I even tried the factory reset but the issue continued, maybe its the firmware I had no problems with the IP address on Orange but as for them as an ISP, well we don't need to go there. IDNet is such a breath of fresh air lets just say that. I shall wait and see if Rik has any ideas, and thanks for the swift reply  ;D

Welcome to the forum. :)

TBH, I have no idea what would cause your problem. I do know that there's at least one bug in the .28 firmware, though, so you might want to try reverting to the .20 version and see if that helps.

If it doesn't, I would suggest having a word with support, resolving this is probably going to involve asking questions you couldn't answer in open forum.

I will take this issue up with support as you suggest, thanks for all your help  :)

Let us know how it's resolved, it might be useful for future reference :)

I have what seems to be the answer to this issue hopefully, support have heard of this happening with Netgear routers before and with some others as well after power outages or spikes. You need to backup your router profile when all is working as it should be, then if you lose power and get this issue reset the router, which on the Netgear DG834/DG834G etc is a very small  recessed button on the back, hold the button in for at least 10 seconds to restore the router to factory default, then afterwards enter your router configuration page and restore your saved profile then all should be fine. Doing this worked for me and even the intial setup wizard worked which had failed to do so before (I had to check that out to see what would happen)  ::) Hope that provides some help to anyone who gets this issue  ;D

Glad you got it resolved. Prehaps when I said...

...I should have made it clear to look for a reset button on the hardware, not do it via software.

Thanks for that. I tend to back up the router settings the moment I've finished installing the wee beast - but then anyone here will tell you I'm paranoid about backing up. :)

One thing I have found which will cause Netgears to become confused is the use of the telnet feature in Routerstats.

How do I turn off that feature Rik? Oh and Lance I knew the reset button was on the back already have used that before when I sold routers and wanted to wipe them, I had never backed up a profile before though, but thanks for the help offered, you guys have a very informative forum going here  ;D

Rik

If you're using Routerstats, click on the cog icon, then select "Netgear Telnet". Make sure that the top checkbox, "Enable Telnet" is unchecked.

Never used Routerstats before but have been looking at it just now. Thanks again for all your help here, you learn something new everyday  ;D and I have that backup paranoia you wouldn't believe how many backups of backups I have and now I have the router added to that paranoia

Nice to meet someone with the same disposition. I backup to an internal and two external HDs every day, plus a DVD-RW, with an extra backup each week to an 'off site' external HD. I haven't lost any data for 18 years! :)

The great thing about forums is that we learn from each other every day - I wonder what it would be like to go back to having to rely on manufacturers, but then I just pinch myself and stop dreaming!  ;)

How many times have you had to restore data from your backups?

Never, and I haven't made a claim on my insurance policy over the same period. ;)

I think my backup habits stem from my working days, when the files represented many chargeable hours of work. The value of the data was, therefore, high - several hundred pounds for a single file was not unusual. I couldn't afford to take risks, not least because I was usually working to deadlines.
