New Laptop - Arrgh!!

Well, got my new laptop today, and have spent literally hours just fiddling about trying to get it 'straight'. The amount of ~~cr*p~~ stuff Acer load onto it is amazing, but I guess par for the course. In fact, I almost wiped it all and reinstalled Vista, but of course, they don't give you a full CD. I spent literally the whole morning trying to get the damned thing to recognise my desktop PC via wireless, and still don't know how I managed to get it to work, but eventually, it just did. I am now having trouble with Sea Monkey. The browser is fine, but the mail client keeps crashing before I can even set up the accounts. Running out of time and patience now, and I hate leaving things unresolved over night.

You will sort it Simon, I agree the Acer's do come with a fair bit of carp on them, but no more than any of the others I suspect.

I have an Acer PC out in Spain, the build quality is superb, and excellent VFM.

If it's any consolation, I get my wireless working first time

, and HPs come with a load of rubbish too!

As for Sea Monkey, I'm not sure if I've even heard of it so can't help on that either!

I agree that Acer's need a crash diet on delivery, I think I spent the best part of a day getting rid of the junk, including Norton AV

. I've seen several reports of problems getting wireless to work in Vista, if the problem returns you might want to have a browse over on ThinkBroadband. As to SeaMonkey - me neither.

I cannot get on with the pads, Simon, I always plug in a mouse as a first step. The keyboards are less comfortable than a full-sized one, but I found that I do get used to them.

The keyboard on my lappy is pratically full size (it has a numeric keypad!), just a bit of getting used to needed for the half length shift key on the right hand side

I seem fine with the pads, once I have changed the sensitivity to my liking!

My hands tend to tremble a bit, so the pads see every movement as a double-click - it makes navigating hard work!

I'm still fiddling about trying to get it how I want it, but I think I'm making the mistake of trying to clone my old desktop PC. Better the devil you know, and all that. I need to get used to this as a separate machine, and once I get that into my mindset, I'll probably get on much better with it, especially when I get a mouse, a keyboard, and a large separate monitor.

No, but really it's fine. It will be better when I get a proper mouse though.

TBH, all my machines are set up to be as identical as possible. I hate switching machines and not having the right software, or having to look for it in a different place.

It's down to how you work, Simon. In my case, I don't want to fire up one machine and then find that I need to move to a second one to do something. It's my classic idle nature.
