Hi all.

First question is: how long can a RJ45(cat5e) cable be before you get any problems?

Next question is: Will a 25/30m RJ45(cat5e) cable be better than a 25m RJ11?

Final question is: Where can i get a roll of 50/100m cat5e cable?

Thanks.
Paul

1) A single segment can be 100m long in ethernet, but I'd try to keep it to half that, personally.

2) If the RJ11 was phone line to router, then definitely yes.

3) Maplin, Screwfix, probably somewhere like Solwise.

Yes the RJ11 is the cable that runs from the filter to my router upstairs. But i want to move the router downstairs and connect my computer upstairs with a 25m ethernet/cat5e cable

Think of getting this:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=99612&&source=14&doy=5m9

Is there anything else i've missed and need?

That looks good to me, though I'd query the crimping set with Maplin before buying. From the Q&A:

Q) Is the crimper suitable for solid core network cables? - Donovan
A) Yes the product does support that.

Q) Hi Are the RJ45 connectors supplied in the kit suitable for both solid core and stranded ethernet cable? Thanks - Robert King
A) Suitable for stranded cable only.

I'd probably get a few extra RJ45 connectors in to allow for my mistakes. Also, of course, cable clips...

Yeh i'm gunna get a packet of 100 rj45 connectors. Getting the tools from maplin since it comes with 2 and just the rj45 tool on screwfix is £20 so makes sense to me ;D

I've got cable trunking up already so dont need cable clips :)

Cheat. :)

I would query the question of whether the crimper handles solid and/or stranded though.

It looks OK, but there is no information about it and the printed catalogue is no better. That said, if it wasn't suited to the cable they are selling, I'd be surprised.

Whats best to get. the cat5e in the link above or go for shielded cat5e?

Rik

I'd go with shielded, but then I make multiple backups, so you can't trust my judgement. :)

Rik

I'm paranoid - one internal HD, two external HDs and a DVD-RW daily. Once a week, a further external HD, stored off site.

Not to mention the copies I network to other machines. :)

Can you use cat5e as a rj11 cable?

Rik

Yes, you can, it works better than standard phone cable.

Hope so. Costing me enough  :P

Another question, Where can i get RJ11 connectors from?

Or one of those silver rj11 cables you can get, the shielded ones.

Do i need to order the FCC68 Plug 6P4C ones?

Also do you know what order the cables go into the RJ45 and RJ11 connectors?

Rik

As far as I could work out, the 4 & 6 way could be used for phones (RJ11) and the 8 way for ethernet (RJ45), but I'd suggest asking Maplin to be sure - they don't make it totally clear.

The pinouts are listed here.

Do RJ45 connectors open up?

Rik

I suppose that depends on whether they are factory-fitted or user-fitted tbh. I've never tried though.
