Hi All

My first post here so be gentle :)

Have just moved to Liverpool from Harrogate, couldn't get cable so have jumped on the adsl bandwagon with idnet.

Just been doing some digging and it looks like my max speed may only be 512, (cry's) is anyone on here in the l1,l2,or l3 postcode? Just wondering what sorts of speeds you can get, looks like i'm using the liverpool central exchange. I thought moving to a city would mean some decent bandwidth looks like I'm probably wrong, any input would be appeciated,

cheers

Rik

Hi and welcome to the forum. Have a karma, it's our way of being gentle. ;)

Can you dig out your line stats, and we'll give you an idea of what sort of speeds you can look to achieve, and what you might be able to do to help. TBH, knowing someone else's speed isn't going to be very helpful unless they live in close proximity, as the cable runs need to be similar to gain any information. It won't be a lot of consolation, but living in Milton Keynes, I can only achieve 2Mbps. Too much aluminium. :(

HI Rik

Thanks for the response. Couldn't really comment previously as my line wasn't even up and running. It looks like am probably getting speeds of about 237k down, so thats a lot better than expected, I will put some stats up after the 10 training period has been completed.

Cheers

Rik

It would be worth looking at your stats before the end of the training period in case there's anything you could do to improve things before your Fault Threshold Rate becomes set in stone...

You're on the maximum sync speed for an interleaved connection with some noise margin 'headroom' in hand. I would expect a throughput in the region of 670kbps.

Can you do a BT speedtest - you'll need to enter your phone number and IDNet login in order to run the tests. If you cut'n'paste the result, we'll have an idea what's going on. Note that the site is often busy and gives out weird error messages when it is. The best time is generally early morning, say 5-9am.

Hi Rik

Thanks for that the output is below

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 6000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5657 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

It looks like something has changed, since last checked, can now dowload at about 700kbps, so a big improvement, looks like BT are still doing something with the line, if it stays like this I will be very happy :) a lot better than the possible 512 I was originally advised of, hoping it stays this way, this for the responses ;)

Rik

I missed a 0 in my last post - I've never been good with my zeros. :)

Your profile is one step down from your sync speed, so I suspect you have had a lower sync speed at some point recently, something between 6816 and 7391. If you maintain your current sync, your profile will increase to 6500. I suspect that your line is still settling, so keep an eye on it for the next week or so. As you say, it's a lot better than 512k. :)
