Slow forum

If anyone is experiencing problems with the forum being slow, or even timing out, IDNet are aware of the cause and are working on it. Even before I could tell them. :)

Its not just this, i'm getting huge lagspikes on IRC, got booted from world of warcraft and most websites are slow/unresponsive

Same here could not access any site for a while, massive lag seems ok now though  :-\

There's been a problem with a switch in Docklands. It seems to be fixed now.

Certainly not fixed yet, at least not at this end.  Seem to be major routing problems resulting in some sites being inaccessible and huge variation in latency and packet loss to others, and varying on a minute-to-minute basis.  Took 15 mins of trying even to post this.

Seems I was being over-optimistic. Email is down for me at the moment, plus a number of sites.

 :( same here posting from my phone. Some sites were not loading at all and the forum was giving error messages. And my kettle stopped boiling and the cat is stuck in mid air now!

Message from Simon:

The problem was traced to a server that one of our Resellers hosts on our network. It appears that it was hacked this afternoon. We think that it had not been patched for a while. It is now off-network so that our customer can examine the extent of the damage.

Our Telehouse datacentre was not affected but the nature of the traffic caused problems in our Telecity datacentre which is where our mail server and web server are located.

Thanks Simon.  Well done to the team for their quick resonse and problem solving.  I can now get out from under the bed as my wife can play poker again.  It was frightening for a while. ;D

Are we sure its been completely fixed?  There is one site that I still cant login to on their secure server. Every other secure site seems to work fine (banks/Bsocs) and the site concerned have told me that there is no problem with it (Large financial institution). No other customer has made a complaint.
Nothing on my PC has changed and I cannot log on  using 2 separate PCs with either my own or wifes ID and P/ws.  The only thing in common is IDnet.   Using IE and FF with same results. This has been happening since friday last. I originally suspected a problem with the website but Im assured that its functioning correctly.
Sent email to IDN  but as yet no response.

Any clues??

The outage happened yesterday so that would not explain the site not working from Friday, maybe a PM to Rik with the site in question so he could test it may help

IDNet will be responding to you shortly. As Gary says, if it's been happening since Friday, it's not anything to do with yesterday's events.

From what you say, you can get to the web page but not log in? If that's so, I would expect it to be a problem with the website. It might be worth clearing all temporary files and cookies then trying again. If you couldn't get to the page, I'd be suggesting that you try an alternative DNS server or check your MTU setting.

Also might be worth flushing your DNS cache type ipconfig /flushdns as it is typed here into "run" then press ok, a DOS window will flash up quickly, see if that helps after trying Riks suggestions.

Update!   Done all of the above and more. Contacted the institution concerned, giving details/customer number etc, though they say there isnt a problem for anyone else but will pass on to IT support. Will call back! (yeah right)
While Im waiting, I decided on a whim that Id reconnect my old wireless router just out of interest.  Wham! connection.

Now, which was it. The old router or the IT support. Will I ever know, though I'll try the 'new router' when its cooled down to see if the fault re-occurs. 
Im wondering though why would the site connected to a router that works for all other sites and also rejects random IDs and PINs that I enter,  not work when the correct info is put in.
Can anyone explain to me why this should be?  Whats it got to do with the router?

Answers/suggestions would be most welcome.

The only thing I can think of is that the change of router would have flushed the DNS cache, but you'd done that already. Possibly, therefore, the new PPP session cleared something.

I'll be interested to hear if it occurs again.

I had a router than needed random reboots to allow me to use msn messenger, all other pages and internet programs worked but not that, pull the power reboot and it was ok, when I went back to the DG834G that isssue vanished, the router was a DG834PN.

I suppose we take our routers a bit for granted, Gary, yet they do a lot of work for us and, unlike our computers, generally run 24/7 without being re-booted. Perhaps it's just that simple?

Could be but I'm sure that simpler is better, that was a flashing disco mimo router you could cook eggs on, my present one, well it just works really  ;D

Well the old router (Edimax) is still working OK.  Decided to reconnect the newish Buffalo Airstation but still had the same problem of not being able to log in to the particular secure server.  Even pressed the reset button and reentered the isp details etc.  No luck.    Then "thinks"  RTFM.   Reset has to held in for at least 30 seconds. Reentered the details, and the connection is up and I can now log in.  Why ? 

Interesting though that the old router syncs at 500 more than the new one.  I think I'll move back to the Edimax.  Struggling now to think of why I changed them at all.

Could be to do with the firmware or the firewall not excepting packets from that site its really hard to say, but if your old one works then use that  ;D sometimes after a power outage when a router reboots it can cause issues like yours but there could be many reasons, all probably based the ADSL driver, some routers like computers like to re rebooted after hundreds of ours running 24/7.
