Well 1st off i still have the ringwire
The phone socket is downstairs next to two electrical sockets.
This is the only phone socket we have.
I have "10 Meter Cat 5e Cable (blue if it matters )" running from the router downstairs.
Our telephone wires are underground
Theres only our telephone and the adsl line plugged into mr "soap on a rope" :/

Rik

Hi Sam

If you only have one socket, you don't have a ringwire - it's only used when extensions are wired in (the circuitry is connected inside the master socket, so doesn't need a wire at that point).

It doesn't sound like there's a lot you can do, except get BT to re-locate the master socket (£160+). :(

Think its the blue Cat 5e colour cabling, red is always faster like Ferrari's I mean a blue Ferrari would bound to be slow  ;)
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Haha!

What are my options then?

How does this 2wire perform, is it the thing to get at the moment?

Meant to be great for long noisy lines, Lance is the man with the knowledge on them

Your options are a bit like mine, Sam, live with the line or move - unless you can persuade your parents to fork out for a master socket relocation, which might not achieve anything. What happens if you take the lappy down to the master socket/router - do you get any improvement?

All the reports I have seen on the 2 Wire have been enthusiastic, but I haven't tried one myself.

One thing you could try is de-tuning an AM radio, and wandering about the house, and particularly along the course of the phone and network wiring, listening for interference.

Sam, Once it arrives I'll let you know, it should be here tomorrow or Saturday. I got it off ebay, the 2 I was watching last night went for less than £12 + delivery, http://preview.tinyurl.com/228xsp

Glenn

Sam,

It's a breeze to set-up following the instructions here I have just put it in and it has connected at around a 10% increase from 2.4 - 2.6mbs. I can't see any QoS service on it but I'll have a look as I may have missed it. I'm still trying to workout how to set the static routing up too.

Is it good to use performance wise compared to whatever b4?  :)

Lance

I find for wireless range, it's much better than my linksys used to be, and that's on the standard setting.

Using other firmware, you can crank up the power a fair bit, but using such high power is illegal in the UK ;D

It seems faster to display pages, I haven't tried it yet gaming as most of my race nights are Friday and Saturday's. As Lance says the wireless range seems good. I got a Dual SSID version so, as far as I know it can't be flashed with a different firmware just yet.

The router resync'd last night up another 200kbs to 2816, my Netgear never reached those levels on this line.

 :iagree:

The 2700 is a seriously good bit of kit and I continue to be amazed at tis stability and power, plus has always given me higher speeds than any other router (and I am fortunte enough to have tried most of them)

Add the fact it costs very little compared so some of the pretty blue flashing lights types out there, I would say get one while you can, cos they are getting snapped up.

Dont forget your wetwipes though Glenn, you'll need them for your drool.............once you see how it eventually performs.

and no Rik I am not on commission with BT or 2WIRE or anyone !!!!

lol,

So im guessing gaming with it is quite a pleasure?

Lowest ping i seem to get nowadays is like 30 and thats on an idnet hosted server :(

Ill be sending the netgear back to idnet now...so this 2wire thingy is the thing to get?

Should i get it pre-unlocked or unlock it myself?

I like the sound of illegal - extra - power  >:D

Is the HGV the one with wireless or what?  :D

Cheerd

Lance

The HGV is wireless with VOIP. I think there is a HG which is without the VOIP, but I'm not sure if BT sold any of these.

If you want the illegal power, you have to try and get one with the older (v4) firmware. With that in mind, it makes no difference between buying a locked or unlocked one.

Unlocking a locked one without flashing the firmware (which must be done if you get one of the newer ones with v5 firmware) is easy enough to do, I think Glenn posed a good link.

I have enquired which firmware this is on

Decent buy or could be had cheaper? Is this power illegal in uk cause it fries stuff? lol
So basically  i need to aim for a v4 for full functionality unless there is better performance with v5?
