Windows stealth update causes problems

Turns out the stealth update issued for the windows update service has caused problems for people trying to do a windows repair using the windows cd. After an in place re-installation which leaves all you applications intact (well in theory)  you have to download all the windows patches again, but because of the stealth update it stops XP from installing about 80 of the most recent patches!  http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,137770-c,xp/article.html

I think it goes with the territory. In the days of MFM disks, doing that was a pretty terminal solution.  >:D
