Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but I couldn't find anything.

I am being plagued by large quantities of spam mail to my @idnetfreemail.co.uk address.  Filtration on key words is not very effective due to content as bitmap.  I don't want to restrict to a list of incoming users.

My google mail address seems to filter spam very well indeed.

Is there a way to improve filtration of incoming mail to my @idnetfreemail.co.uk address please?  If google can do it, surely idnet can do something similar.

Thanks - -

Rik

The easiest way might be to set up and idnet.com address and forward your idnetfreemail address to that. With the new email addresses, you can fine tune the spam filter.

Much thanks.  I'll try that.

The other option would be to forward it to GMail, of course...

I have found what seems to be an extremely flexible spam blocker that does the job with a mail bounce back facility.  It can be set to bounce mail on key words without the mail even getting to you from the server.

This is a new breakthrough for me at least:

http://www.mailwasher.net/

It has a good free version and professional upgrades.

Yes, not being funny, MailWasher has been around for years, and I have been using it from the beginning.  It's the first thing I fire up on starting the PC, and I couldn't live without it.  The free version only supports one mail account, but the Pro version supports multiple accounts.  Highly recommended for local spam filtering.

Have a Karma as a welcome, and for the recommendation.  :)

I used to use Mailwasher but now have an email account with spamcop.net so that I can report spam and have it dealt with professionally. I was particularly uneasy at Mailwasher's bounce facility, as I think many, if not most, spam return addresses are forged and it's likely to be some innocent party that receives the bounce.

Oh yes, I don't use the Bounce facility, as it seemed to produce even more spam, as well as for the reason you mentioned, Colin.

:( I've had my freemail account forwarded onto my idnet.com account as i wasnt sure who had my new email...now I have millions of emails (3 a say at least) telling me I'm less of a man unless I buy the new product and explore my wildest fantasies...i'm very happy as I am but still i wonder..  ::) best way to stop them lol?

Use the spam filter once everything is back and running, Sam.

I use the idnet.com email with my domain name emails forwarding to there and have very little spam. I also use Outlook 2007 and this filters what gets through.

My experience of free spam filters such as those with Idnet.com and Googlemail is that they too often filter out perfectly innocent emails for no apparent reason and for that reason I have stopped using them.

Even though you can check through the spam for genuine emails, it is too easy to miss one good one amongst the dozens of rubbish ones. Two weeks ago the Idnet.com spam filter filtered out a simple two line email from a friend informing me of another friend's funeral, similarly googlemail filtered out a simple email from someone wanting to buy something.

Does anyone else have experience of emails being filtered out for no apparent reason?

At present I am trying Cloudmark which seems excellent - but you have to pay for it!

Rik

I've seen the innocent trapped amongst the dross. It's why I prefer not to filter at the server, but locally.
