I've sat watching my synch speed at 8093 for 3 days and now my data rate has just upped to 7000 and my speed is 6613 according to the BT test.. woohoo.. I'm all excited..  :evilb:  :banana2:

Good innit..  ;)

Mine has been like that ever since I joined IDNet..  ;)

was on "orange broadband" at .2kbps (note point) i am point 9 km from exchange, was with them on freeserve dialup, then wanadoo broadband, then orange, prior to orange was not too bad.
then orange said .2 was the best they could do ,due to BT problems

changed to idnet, and instantly went to 4.9 mbps ,and been like it for two months now
wonder what happened to the BT problems ???

keep it going idnet

Simon

Hi Merlin, and    Have a welcome karma!  :)

Merlin1 you must have a very good line to get 4.9mb at 9km from the exchange, I get 2mb at 5km.

Glenn, i think you misread that, i am POINT 9 km from the exchange

Ann

That's a bit slow then really isn't it?  I'm further away from the exchange with a faster speed.

Don't worry, Glenn. I missed it altogether. ;)

I seem to be 1.7km from the exchange and from memory have a line attenuation of 39 and the noise margin reading was 12 and a synch speed of 8093.

I read all about this last night but still can't get into my head what it all means and how it works.  I never was any good at physics and stuff.  It's probably why I ended up doing philosophy at university

Malc

I agree, speeds are so much faster here, before Id I was around 6100, now I can get 8000 and I'm about half a mile from the exchange.

Odd how you can get so much more out of the same line by changing ISP.

Hi Ann

An attenuation of 39db would suggest a cable run of 3-3.5km, but that's very dependent on the quality of the cable, if it's thin aluminium, it will have higher attenuation than thick copper, for example.

Your synch speed is probably 8095, just short of the maximum possible, so you should have a profile of 7000.

The noise margin is the amount of headroom the router has before it can no longer distinguish the ADSL signal from the noise on the line. It's not the same as a signal-to-noise ratio, but it is related. The target for an ADSL Max line is 6db, but if you sync at, or near, the max, then the margin will be larger, meaning you have more headroom and, thus, more stability.

merlin

somewhere on this forum i have already posted this question, but now i can't find it anywhere ??

so at the risk of repeating myself, how do you measure your line attenuation, sync ,snr, etc etc

keep it simple please,

thx

Rik

What router or modem are you using?

The answer is probably at:

RIK
i'm using a netgwear ADSL2+MODEM ,supplied and setup by idnet, model number DM111P

it has a single output, but that's all i need.

i tried the web site you suggested , but they did not list my model, so how do i find out my stats now??

is there another and better router/modem out there which maybe i should change to.??

colirv

You might try the instructions for the Netgear DG834 that she does mention.

As Colin says, try the DG834 instructions, otherwise, give support a ring or email and they should be able to tell you how to extract the information.

I just Googled for the manual. It says:

Use the modem management utility to configure the Internet connection as follows:
1. On your PC, open a Web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, and type the URL
http://192.168.0.1. in the address box. A dialog box will be displayed prompting you for a user
name and password.

2. Type admin for the user name, password for the password, and click OK to open the main
utility window in your web

Viewing the ADSL Status

From the Maintenance section of the main menu, click ADSL Line Status.:
The upper table indicates how the modem has detected the ADSL parameters are configured,
except for the "Line Up Time", which indicates the time elapsed since the last reset or power
cycle.

The lower table provides information about the quality of upstream and downstream data. These
statistics will be of interest to your technical support representative if you are having problems
obtaining or maintaining a connection.
