Can someone try this site for me?

It's the online newspaper site www.guardian.co.uk  Every time that I try it, it just stops dead, I can't scroll down or can't close the page. I have to do a ctrl alt delete to get out of it. It's been happening for the last two days and I'm mystified as there's been no problem before.

I've tried it again, still ok for me. Sorry, you will have to wait for the brains to arrive, I haven't a clue what the problem is.

Noreen

Thanks. It's really strange as I can load the page but then can't click on anything and I'm not having problems with any other sites.

It's ok for me, Noreen.   Try clearing your cache.

Noreen, do you have any ad or pop up blockers running?  Sometimes, if part of a page is blocked, it will prevent the rest of the page from loading fully, and create your symptoms.  Otherwise, as Alf said, try clearing your cache.  It's fine for me too, by the way.

www.ccleaner.com is good for this  ;)

Or in FF just press ctrl, shift and delete  :)

Thanks to everybody. I've cleared the temp file. In the toolbar at the bottom of the page it says that it is loading the site and in the area where it shows the the little coloured vertical bars as it loads it stops after the first bar and there is no "hourglass" shown. In Task Manager it says that the Guardian site is "running". I went to a news site where there were links to Guardian pages  http://www.newsnow.co.uk/newsfeed/?name=Current+Affairs and could access them with no problem but when I clicked on the Guardian name at top left of the page to go to the front page I got the problem again.  I'm at a loss. The problem is obviously just with the front page.

I'm using XP with IE6, NOD32, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, SpywareBlaster and Comodo firewall.

I wonder if Comodo or NOD32 is blocking something on the page?  I'm not familiar with either, but does one or both of them have content blockers?   Have you tried using Firefox instead of IE6, Noreen?

It's very strange, Noreen is having problems with the front page only  :)

Hi Noreen

What everyone else said. :)

It might be worth flushing your DNS cache, just in case it's that. In a CMD window, type ipconfig /flushdns <ENTER>.

Also, try using one spyware blocker at a time if that doesn't work. It may be that they are falling over each other.

I haven't time today but I'll try disabling each of those protection programs one at a time tomorrow. I'll also try your other idea. I've never had this problem before and as far as I know it's only with this one front page, once I get to the inside pages (via other routes) there's no problem.

That's why I'd recommend starting with a DNS cache flush, Noreen. It may be there's some stale data in there which is getting in the way.

Noreen, have you installed the latest SpyBot?  If so have you installed the patch for it?  It is a symptom of the latest Spybot to cause page loading problems without the patch.  I have removed Spybot now and page loading seems much faster.  I rely on Avast, Windows Defender and my roouter firewall only and have had no problems for years.

If you don't have the latest spybot then ignore this reply. ;D

Well, I've been away from home since yesterday morning and have just got back to the Guardian front page problem, amazed to discover that there is now no problem with the page, I can click on links and scroll as usual. The only thing that has changed is that NOD32 was updated when I turned on the computer a little while ago, nothing else is allowed to update automatically. Of course it's possible that the Guardian site has changed something. Anyway the problem is now solved without any action from me, thanks to all for your ideas though.

I have got the latest SpyBot and the patch is installed, you'll find that I posted a link for the patch some days ago.
