Will my Sagem F@st 800 allow me to take advantage of the adsl max services?  ???
Its usb and is branded with an evil TalkTalk logo >:(

Xbandito

Well on searching....it is capable of 896kbps......so that is 8mb capable (same as my voyager 205) and as I doubt you will get a full 8mbs, it should be ok.

mrapoc

if its nowhere near i will order a cheap ethernet and wireless router. will this increase my 2mbps speed at all?

Xbandito

Your modem you have now should do for maxdsl....to get higher speeds depends on your Attenuation and Noise Margin (SNR).
Peeps with more techy knowladge will/can explain it better than me   :)

mrapoc

attenuation 22db and bad noise margin 33db ???

Xbandito

well putting them figures in here -:

Gives a nice 8mb  :o

Depends also whether or not you have USB1.1 or 2.0. USB1.1 is only capable of 12Mbit/sec throughput. If you have other USB devices using available bandwidth then this is a less than perfect situation ;)

I really would invest in an ethernet router, you will probably see your linestats improve slightly.

Personally, I installed an ADSL faceplate on master socket and use a CAT5 cable too. All told, from what I can recall from old Speedtouch 330 stats, my SNR has improved by about 8dB (though this varies all the time which is normal) and downward attenuation by 2dB.

Neverthless, it is technically possible for a USB modem even plugged in to a 1.1 hub to perform fine on Max. But it is possible that it won`t. I`d remove all doubt ;)

mrapoc

if it doesnt i was thinking about buying a cheap ethernet adsl modem off ebuyer.com
any suggestions? ;D

Jeff

Well, I paid only £35 for a Netgear DG632. Not everyones cup of tea as it takes some manual fine tuning to get it to hum sweet, but I`ve got it spot on :) Needed to configure some ports in and out for P2P to work as it would slow everything down otherwise (can`t handle NAT pings very well in factory default mode) but I have no bother with it otherwise.

Billion series of routers come very well recommended ;)

Coopes

How do I find out what my attenuation and noise margins are please.

What modem/router do you have?

mrapoc

Which of these two would you go for?

I`ve just downloaded the manual for your router. ;)

You need to log on to your router (http://192.168.1.1) and choose the top button "Wizard" over to the left then choose the tab "Status" which is 4th one along. :)

Coopes

this is what it says
DSL Status
  Connection Status Connected
  Upstream Rate (Kbps) 288
  Downstream Rate (Kbps) 1152
  US Margin 24
  DS Margin 3
  Modulation MMODE
  LOS Errors 0
  DS Line Attenuation 51
  US Line Attenuation 60
  Path Mode Fast Path

DSL Statistics
Near End F4 Loop Back Count 0
Near End F5 Loop Back Count 0

Mark, with a DS Margin of 3 I`m afraid you won`t get Max. Maybe get Simon to confirm this but I reckon no :(

Xbandito

Jeff, what snr margin do you need to get Max ?.
For mine has been hovering around the 6 mark and I am still only 2mb.
Sync has now dropped to 7392

Jeff

I`m starting to realise a few things ;)

Reading between the lines, I think BT must check on your line every so often, however they do this I don`t know but I reckon that if at the time they "test" it and SNR is below 6, they will auto resync your line until SNR improves. They keep on doing this for 10 days and then wammo, whatever they determine is your best sync rate is what you will always sync at ... I presume ;)

I should have just said 6 :)

Jeff

BTW, have you rebooted recently? BTs 75 minutes is getting ridiculous for ya now X!

Xbandito

Hmm rebooted.......yup (quite a few times) in the day...let some sit for 30mins etc
just did a check.....sync now at 7360

ooooooo telnet just went mad....warnings ppp down atm vc down
major alarm dsl interface down  ???

Jeff

Crikey, you`ve blown it up!

Xbandito

#22
possibly...
I now get a snr of 7.5 and everything has moved from "downfast" to "downintrlvd" and I sync at 7552..........but there are now figures in the "rvalue"  16 upintrlvd and 16 downintrlvd    ???

Jeff

It looks as though interleaving has been switched on on your line. I thought by default that it would be switched off, though interleaving helps stabilise a line so perhaps BT Trainer felt it needed to do it?

Xbandito

So bang goes my future online gaming then   :(

Jeff

Well, what are your pings like? ;)

Xbandito

I did say "future" Jeff........when they bring out a "popular" game that does not give me motion sickness   :(

Jeff

Yes they are. Previously under IPStream or DataStream you would only hope to get 1Mbit with those stats ;)

This evening, expect to see your sync drop as exchange contention kicks in or not, depending on what state your exchange is in VP wise ;)

Coopes

Still not getting anywhere near 8mb, but ah I was only on 1mb yesterday, so still big improvement.

Jeff

You`ll not get 8MBit, not everyone will. Product is sold as "Up to 8MBit" ;)

Coopes

Yeah I know Jeff, not complaining, would be nice to get a bit more
Checked with BT the best I can expect is 3500, like I said up untill yesterday all I could get was 1mb.
so still a happy IDNetter.

Mark, something strange though with stats you posted yesterday. You posted your SNR (DS Margin) as 3. This doesn`t seem right, could it have been a typo as your SNR is at 6 today with Max? I fed the info you provided  yesterday into a checker and it told me you couldn`t expect to see any better than 1Mbit?

Coopes

Hi Jeff, both sets of stats where cut and paste so no typo error.
the first set was done when I was on the one mb connection the second
on the max connection.

I don't think I should be connected :o

Coopes, I had an SNR of 0 for virtually all of Tuesday evening and line stayed up ;)

Basically, your line will stay up if exchange equipment can still "hear you" and obviously it did :)
