My first ever post in IDnetters ..despite this i have been with IDnet 16 months.. and i think its 1st class ISP  ;D

Got a question though that youve probably heard a millions times before... but... im getting low rates on speedtest.. highest rates about 3722 on speedtest.net and upload 380.
Now ive no idea if this is new or not because i never bothered to test it before  ::)  (i was just thankful to get away from orange bb)  and whilst i can build pc's with ease..im a total noobette at the most simple network tasks.  :-[

Im using a Netgear DG834 connected straight to wall socket (via a filter)  which i have swapped a few around in case it was that.
My router shows 5056 kbps
33 LA
And 13 SNR

Im less than 2 miles from my exchange (dont have exact figure but i can find out)

Erm no idea what other info may be required...but any advise would be appreciated  :)

Simon

Hi kmcnx, and have a hello karma!  :)

I can't answer your question, but in anticipation of someone who can, they will probably ask you to do a test on http://speedtester.bt.com/ and post the results.  ;)

Thanks Si  :D

Well i went to speedtesterbt like you kindly suggested.

When i input my login info noticed dsl4 at the end of my login  ???

IP profile for your line is - 4000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  4928 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3704 kbps

hmmm

Ann

That sounds about right.  You are getting the highest speed that you can get at the moment.

I squeezed a bit more out of mine by getting a new faceplate http://www.clarity.it/telecoms/adsl_faceplate.htm for the telephone socket to use insead of the dongly thing and by getting better quality cable from socket to router.  It has actually made quite a bit of difference.

As Ann says, your throughput is spot on for your profile, which is spot on for your sync speed.

However, in your first post, you reported a higher sync speed and a noise margin of 13db. This makes me wonder if your line has been 'flapping' - losing connection and re-connecting at a lower speed. The Netgear will log disconnections, so check the log and look for 'Loss of sync' messages - do you have many?

As tortoise said filtered facplates can make a lot of differernce as can removing the bell wire for noise issues and making sure your cabling is away from electrical wiring, see FAQ. If you can hunt out the Adsl Nation faceplate or even thier soap on a rope microfilters, they are probably the best quality on the market at this time  :)

Thanks for all advise  :)

Im just suprised thats its my limit.. living very close to central london i presumed id get double esp as line supports bt max which i think is alot higher????  :-\ but u can never presume anything in life  :(

Lance

BT max is up to 8mb, and what you are on. The next step up is 24mb but that is only currently available on LLU suppliers.
