Hi everyone, I have been experiencing some problems with my connection over the past few days. I am still in the 10 day training period so I appreciate there wil be some disconnections, but more frequently I am getting a problem which I cannot explain. My connection stays connected but I cannot connect to any web pages or download from any programs, then when i disconnect to try to re connect again the dial up software says no response from server no matter how many times I try. The only way I can connect back to the internet is to re-start my laptop!?!

Can anyone shed any light on this? I accept the disconnections but this is very annoying to do three or four times a day. Many thanks

Lloyd

Not really sure I can help as much as someone else on this forum can. But have you tried reinstalling you software, updating it to a newer piece of software for the device. Tried a different modem to see if it is the connection that is the problem or a router.

As a last resort disabling firewall and or anti virus to see if they are conflicting with you internet.

You don't say which modem you have so can't really help much more.

Jeff

Try this:

Hold down Alt and double click My Computer, choose hardware, select Device Manager and locate your modem. Select properties, choose Power Management and uncheck the box where it asks if the device can bring can bring PC out of standby ... this won`t do the trick but may be the solution whereby you won`t have to reboot when you lose connection.

Now, I`m going off memory here as I don`t have a modem installed, but there should be a properties box if you double click on the modem icon in your sys tray (beside the clock). Open it up and check that:

There is no timeout set for idle activity (or similar words), infinite number of redials until a connection is established. There should also be a tab for protocols. The following should be selected if available:

VCI: 38
Authentication Method: CHAP
Connection Type: PPOA

Hope anything I`ve reckoned helps, if not, come back ... maybe you can open up all the tabs, take some screenshots, post `em here? :)

Thanks for the help everyone, the drop of connection seems to be fixed now, it is past the 10 day period. But I am experiencing huge fluxuations in line speed, after a little digging about though I am beginning to think its my old 330 modem. So I may invest in a router, anyway thanks again for the help.

maxping

I have a 330 modem and i get as good speeds with it as i do with my modem router.

Have you used the latest driver here -

http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/330.asp (look for high speed driver)

cosmicdance

Glad to hear you got it sorted Loyd I know it's annoying when you can't get online.

I can recommend the Netgear DG384 router, I've used it for a month now and had the 330 USB before that. It's a good price too £100 from PC World.

I can recommend the Netgear DG632 which you can buy for under 40 quid too ... needs a wee bit more user tweaking than the DG834 that cosmic recommends but I can help :)

The 330 will work, but I would be concerned if:

Your sync rate is high
You only have USB 1.1 on your PC
You have other USB devices connected.

FWIW, IDNet do not recommend using the 330 with MaxDSL, as do other ISPs I read ;)

lloyd-h-jones

How do I check if my sinc rate is high, or if I have USB2 ports? The laptop I am using is only three months old from Dell.

Maxping - I upgraded my drivers to the latest high speed ones in preperation for the move to Idnet. To be fair to the old 330, I am getting consistant speeds of 600kbps now, but I am getting the odd disconnection.

About 99% of my disconnections are coming from when someone phones into my house phone, so i'm guessing its a filter problem? I never had a problem with the filter on my old connection though? Do they need changing with MaxDSL???

mrapoc

hmm dell, how much did it cost?

In short, no. MaxDSL is still ADSL in whatever form. Telephony devices need to be filtered, I urge you to check Sky box, upstairs telephone extensions etc to make sure they are filtered. ;)

Would always prefer faceplate filter over the dangly jobbies anyway. The ADSL Nation one is probably the best: http://www.adslnation.com/phpapps/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=105

And you should also see if the ring wire has been disconnected ... if not, you should consider doing so. It's possible this is the cause of your disconnections when the phone rings. There's a full explanation here: http://www.readman.dsl.pipex.com/other/UKphonecatwiring.htm under the section headed "What's all this about the ring wire removal then?"

Jeff

Good advice, as always from Basso ;)

All setup has not changed since I was running a 2mb connection, only difference is my ISP. Also will check out the advice Basso, appreciate it.

Has it been raining where you are?

I had a problem where when it rained and someone rang, the ADSL died, it turned out to be a faulty earth somewhere outside the house, took the eng around 3 hours to fix.

Same here my wire was catching on an new extension a neighbour had built and it had gone through the insulation letting water in.

BT replaced it for free.

Aye, I know about the precipitation issue only too well
