Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone who has a Netgear DG834G and who is using the 4.01.28 or newer firmware has tried the "new" wireless distribution feature?

If you aren't sure what I'm on about... heres a quote from the Netgear site;

Quote
Added support (DG834Gv3) for Wireless Distribution System (WDS) under the Advanced menu. WDS allows a wireless network to be expanded using access points without needing a wired backbone to connect them. The DG834Gv3 can be configured to connect with other access points as a bridge (with wired clients only) or as a repeater (with wired and/or wireless clients)

I'm currently using my Netgear DG834G v2 as it gets a higher sync, but would happily switch to the v3 if the WDS feature actually works. It also has the useful "WMM-PS", again described below;

Quote
Added support (DG834Gv3) for Wi-Fi Multi-Media Power Save (WMM-PS). WMM-PS extends the battery life of Wi-Fi devices by increasing the efficiency and flexibility of data transmission. With WMM-PS, the same amount of data can be transmitted in a shorter time and using fewer frames, while allowing the Wi-Fi device to remain longer in a low-power, "dozing" state. WMM-PS is enabled by default.

Let me know your thoughts and feedback.

I use the router, Adam, but didn't switch to .28 because it introduced some other problems which were more important to me than the new features.

I have a WGXB102 wireless extender Adam and it works fine with a v3 DG834G using 4.01.28 firmware but what ever you do don't use 4.0.1.30 as it has sync issues, as Rik said .28 has some a few bugs but it holds sync well and the new features are useful, I tried the .20 version Rik sent me and that worked great but with the Stone walls we have I needed an extender and so.28 works OK for me. :) There is a V4 DG834G hitting the market soon, that I would imagine will have the new features anyway so it may be worth waiting possibly :-\

Thanks for the reply, I think I'll give the v3 a try with a wireless extender. I already have a v3 but found the v2 syncs at higher speeds for me, which is really negated by my slow wireless speed. I think the v4 is just a chipset upgrade for now, but I'm sure Netgear will eventually add more features just to make sure people upgrade.

The name of the game is upgrade after all Adam, that's how they hook people, but for now my v3 is good enough, hope the extender works well, mine works fine, but do avoid version .30 it made me sync at a much lower rate than .28 does :)
