Basically that ram you put in may as well be made of tin foil

I get no errors after 24 hours

Send it back - was it generic?

psp83

Its made by PNY and bought from PC World.. I've contacted them and said they wont refund or replace if the package is damaged.. which it is as its one of those packages you have to destroy to get into lol  ;D

Lance

They have to take it back if it is faulty, regardless of packaging. It is your statutory right. If it was just because you had changed your mind they don't have to.

Since putting the old memory back in, the pc has been stable.. If it plays up again i will try the HD from my gaming pc or the other pc downstairs.. Both run XP Pro.

It does seem to be pointing the finger. :(

Two possibilities:

A faulty batch of memory sticks - but doubtful as they are usually checked after manufacture

Or, wrongly packaged / labeled.

Whichever way if they are shown as being compatible with your mobo, PC world have to take them back as they are obviously faulty.

Anyway at least it's running.  Time to do some housekeeping:

Backup

Chkdsk

New windows automated system recovery disk.

And ideally another HD formatted and with xP loaded as an emergency boot drive.
If everything else fails .......................... read the manual!  Some poor sod spent ages writing it.

Point out to them, Paul, that packaging is not part of the contract when it comes to faulty goods, and that, under the Sale of Goods Act, the responsibility is on them to prove the goods were not faulty when you purchased them (for the first six months, after which it becomes your responsibility to prove that they were).

If it gives that many error.... ???

Produce a report - one without the ram (screenshots, photos) and one with. Show them all thos issues!

Bought some more ram today from the shop i normally get my stuff from..

PC is back to its normal self and the 2 new 1gb sticks are not reporting any errors.

I still have one problem thou... Firefox is still not downloading..

If i click a link, the "save" option pops up and i choose to save to a folder.. I go to tools>downloads to see the progress and its not there and nothing downloads

If i right click a link and choose "save as" it downloads to the selected folder but the download box where it shows the progress still doesn't show anything but it does download.

I've tried removing and re-installing.

Got any ideas?

Use IE or Opera?

I don't use FF, so can't help on that one I'm afraid.

I'm happy to download it for you and email it to you in a zip file, Paul.  If you want to, PM me with an email address.  :)

I think he means downloading in general, Simon, not the downloading of actual FF!

What settings do you have on the Tools > Options > Main tab, Paul? (As per Simon's screenshot)

Did you clear out the FF profile information from Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox?

Mine had the exact same settings as the screenshot and i did a total clean including profiles/prefetch/registry etc of firefox.. still couldn't get it to download files...

So i've done something else.. i reformatted the hd.. only took 4 hours to reformatt and get everything back on. So not a big deal to me.

PC is running much better than before  :)

Rik

Extreme, but if it works... I wonder just what was going on?

Yeh the browser is back to normal now.

I had to do a reformatt because i was having trouble with my graphic card drivers aswell..
The 2nd monitor kept going to a blank screen everytime an app was maximized and removing and reinstalling the drivers didnt fix the problem.

I can now arrange stuff on my external drives now. So i dont have to keep backing up my work from the main drives.

Lance

When I used to have more time, I used to do a complete reformat every nine months or so. It's amazing how much of a difference it can make!

Only that 6 months was too soon, and a year to long! :)
