Yay nice and new (Patioheater off dslzone uk is the guy for these  8))

Current stats after an hour up

Downstream Rate:     8128 kbps
Upstream Rate:     448 kbps
Current Noise Margin:     12.0 dB (Downstream), 25.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Attenuation:     25.7 dB (Downstream), 13.5 dB (Upstream)
Current Output Power:     19.8 dBm (Downstream), 11.9 dBm (Upstream)

Any neat tricks to take advantage of? I have the wireless at 6/10 :p

Lance

No tricks that I can think of. It is very much (bearing in mind I'm on BT firmware so it may be a bit different) a plug in and forget unit. There is more settings/information if you go to http://home/tech and enter the system password.

Can you let me know if IGMP is enabled please? Should be the bottom two lines on the summery page the above link takes you to, something like IGMP snooping and IGMP proxy.

Speed Freak alert. ;D I have a problem, using the great 2700 router I sync at 7138kbps however I was going to sell my 585. I put it on the line to reset it this morning and the sync rate went up to 7500kbps and in to the next band. I was not using DMT tool. Now I thought that the 2700 was the best for getting a decent sync rate but now it seems that the 585 is better then that.

Lance

It could be because of the amount of noise on your line at the moment. Noise is generally at it's lowest in the morning, and consequently routers can sync higher while still achieving the 6db margin. However, come the evening when there is more noise about, you may find that it has to re-sync back to a lower value.

Sure thing - lemme get home first

Sorry to hijack again. Very carefully checked sync speed between Speedtouch 585 and 2700 each time I used the 585 my snyc rate was a lot higher. It must be better suited to the exchange. My n/m on both is 9db my line attenuation on the 2700 is 41.6 and on the 585 its 42. Yet the the 585 gives a higher sync.

Since the advent of Max, Bill, there doesn't seem to be a single 'best' router anymore, and your experience demonstrates that, sometimes, the best results are achieved by matching chipsets at each end of your line.

However, it will also be worth monitoring the issue to see whether the Speedtouch gives you the same long term stability as the 2 Wire.

One would be to turn the Wireless Output Power down. Do you really need to have it set that high to connect to your wireless network?
My neat trick would be to wear a lead lined helmet, you're going to fry your brain  ;D
Apart from that mate it's illegal to broadcast wirelessly above a certain level be careful what you're doing.

My Netgear just managed a 17 day session, something of a record. For the last couple of days, it was burbling along happily at 1-2db of margin. I was surprised how long it hung on.

Which version of the 2700 are you using ? On mine there is no way to change the wireless settings.
One thing I have noticed is that the 585 gives me far more errors then the 2700 ever did. Not sure if its down to the router or not.

Lance

He has the SBC firmware, which allows the power setting to be changed right up to 400mw, although I believe that 100mw is the legal UK maximum.

I'm on the BT firmware, and while there are ways to change the setting, I've never needed to.
